1916 Mauser 308

There is a debate on whether or not they can handle the pressure of the 308 round. Some say you are good to go and others say not so. I couldn't get a satisfactory answer to the question so I traded mine for a Mosin M44.
 
The debate over any of these converted rifles has gone on for year....mostly if they are marked for 762NATO or 308. If I remember correctly these spanish mausers are marked 308 so then folks wanna debate about whether the spanish metal used then can really handle 308 over the long haul.

If you are a reloader then no worry as you can always underload them a bit and fire away!
 
I had one that I shot surplus 7.62 x 51 ammo in without any issue. Then some asshole stole it.
 
This is starting to sound like a win to me. I'd say 75% of the 308 ammo I have squirreled away is mil surp 7.62x51. Now the only question is do I buy 2;):cool:
 
There is no difference between 308 and 762x51 except for a couple thousands in headspace specs but tolerances overlap so this doesn't really matter either. The difference in pressures is on account of different methods of measuring SAAMI vs military CUP.

Lots of people have shot both 308 and 762x51 without any problems. My concern was that it has the old small ring design receiver with only two lugs. If it was the large ring receiver with the third lug I would feel a lot better about shooting one.

There is 762x51 cetme ammo with lower pressures which some say the Spanish 1916 was designed to shoot.

True the 762 Cetme round is a different round entirely.

You more or less stated what I alluded to about the 308 vs 762Nato so it sounds like you know what you are getting in to. Now it is decision time...
 
the cases are not the same and neither are the rifle chambers the 7.62x51in a long chamber compared to the commercial 308 andthe commercial cases are thinner and lighter vs 7.62x51 the 2 variances can result in quite a bit of pressure differences as well as actual pressures are different for the loads 308 commercial 62000sami vs 50000cup for the 7.62x51 though that is not as much as you would think since 50k cup is roughly equilivent to to58k sami so that is not potential problem/hazzard it is the case thickness/volume and chamber length that said many rounds have been fired of commercial ammo in the spanish mauser but longterm high use would scare me away when there is easily available 7.62x51 ammo anyway that is what i learned in gunsmith school about the 2 rounds good luck either way

Get your gunsmith to check headspace etc then get a crate of surplus off SGAMMO - then you're good to go IMO.

(not the hot German stuff... MEN)

Fun fact: Europeans and Australians do think Americans have an obsession with headspacing.
