Bad range day!

Here’s a different version of my previous advice.
  • Don’t clean anything
  • Put those guns and that ammo in your car and drive south.
  • When you get to Conway, hand all that stuff to Billy.
  • Watch what happens
Well, I do have some of the .380 left from today's fiasco. And I still have a few boxes of the 9mm I've been using for thousands of rounds.....I'd have to go Wednesday or Thursday, though, because I have stuff going on Friday and Saturday.....

I bet y'all can hear the cursing all over the place, right?

Failure to extract as in the spent case is stuck in the chamber like so??

Yes! I got a pic, but my head is aching too much for me to post it, but that's pretty much how it looks....

I still believe that Millie rides the slide with her off hand and bleeds off slide momentum. She does this more some times than others. That's why she will always have a problem until she controls her off hand thumb.

This will induce malfunctions in most autos, but definitely a 380, easy to do on little guns. Easy enough to check, shoot one handed or put something transferable: grease, dryerase, etc. on the bottom left side of the slide.

Don't discount grip or wrist/arm rigidity either, they can change day to day with varying focus, and/or fatigue. I've had mine go to hell from one stage to the next, for no conscious reason.

Different lots of bulk ammo can vary pretty wildly.

I will not get caught up in an ongoing debate about this particular thing. BUT as to the limp wristing thing....I commonly shoot 1911s here with two fingers, upside down, through a 360 degree arc. I did this for Millie and always do it when this comes up. As others have said the Original 1911 platform was made to shoot from Horseback with One Hand. Ole John Knew how to make it operate under those conditions. A 19911 doesn't care one whit whether it is upside down, sideways or being held with 2 fingers...it'll work.
That ONLY applies to FULL SIZE 1911s!! REREAD PLEASE!!! I make no statements about short slide 1911s or Any other platform. Full Size 1911s will Not malfunction from Limp Wristing.
Take it Away Boys!!!!!
I saw him do this a couple months ago. It worked.
Carry on.

Also if you are having a bad day any the range never end on a bad note or bad shot. Bring the target in close 3-5 yards. Load one round into a magazine and load the gun. Fire the single round into the target dead center. Now pack up and leave. Always leave the range with a good clean shot. I do this even if I have shot well.

At some point reliability becomes more important than comfort or style. You're a step closer to that point today. Sorry you had a bad time but I'll bet you still learned sonething, so not a wasted trip.
Yeah, but what I learned is that now I'm out two carry guns!!! It's not a comforting thing to learn. I guess I'll be carrying Billy's .45 next. I can get thru a magazine in that one without any issues, though the beavertail is a bit mean to the top of my hand. And I'm not what I'd call real accurate with it at the moment. Lol.

Slide back, case still fully in the chamber?
Forget all I said, you either have a broke, worn, weak extractor/spring or a bunch of fouling keeping it from catching the rim.

I'll try it one handed next time, and see, thanks.

Yes, slide back, case in the chamber to where I can barely touch it with a finger.
Gun was cleaned about 300 rounds ago, maybe 400, and it's never been finicky about cleaning.

When you clean it use a plastic cleaning pick ( a toothpick or pieces from an old comb or hair brush will work) and get in between the boltface and the extractor. The tip of the extractor shouldnt be roounded. Pull back on the extractor and let it go....it should snap back into place firmly. Clean the chamber thorougly and wipe away any excess oil in the chamber with a clean patch. Go from there....

@Millie, when you do come this way I have a G42 that you can try. @fieldgrade says that the size is similar to your Sig so you can shoot mine and see how it goes. We know that you did fine with the G43, the G42 is a little bit smaller and with less recoil.

Millie, was this the 1911? Have someone check to see if the extractor has turned or needs adjusting.

Nope, I got another problem child....the p238!
It must be me being bad luck for guns. Now I got two that aren't doing right.

Pass on the match and head to the Battery of Oaks, or do both. You are in need of diagnostics, possible gun smithing and a major confidence boost in yourself and your pistols.

See you Sunday. .
Well, don't want to pass on the match, but do need help in a major way....

Billy's already scrutinized the 1911, so now I guess he gets a peek at the Sig.
Guess I'll see you Sunday.....

I tried a G42, but that was a while ago, maybe it'll be better now. When did I try the 43? I had guns coming at me all that day in January. Did I do well and did I like it?
I have a preference for a bigger gun, but a tiny one is easier to conceal, and less recoil is what I need. If it's snappier than the Sig, I probably won't like it. The p238 is my "snap tolerance" guide!
Am I again looking for a carry gun????? Noooooooooo......

I think I went through 8 carry pistols over a three year period before I settled on the wee Glock I carry now.

Make it a ritual to clean your guns after a match. It gives you a chance to examine them on a consistent basis and become intimately familiar with all the parts and their respective wear patterns.
I like to "foul" mine with a few rounds after cleaning them to confirm operation prior to carrying/next use.

All that means is you need to train harder, nothing else.
I can't physically or financially train more than going 3x a week to the range and shooting from 2-6 boxes of ammo each time I go!

Not sure what more I can do except marry a rich dude so he can pay for my ammo?? Lol.

If you got any other ideas, let's hear 'em, because I really don't want another husband!

I'll take it apart and see if I can find it and see if it snaps back.

I guess I'm not very intimate with my guns. I clean them and move on! I'll try to pay better attention to the various parts.

@Millie , I also have a G48 you can try. Billy and I both have SCCY's you can try. I have a Kel-Tec PF-9 that I know you'll hate.
I think he made me try his SCCY last time, didn't he? Or was it a Kahr? (spelling?)
And are you offering to let me shoot a gun you know I'll hate? Ok, I'm game!

Oh, Lord, help me!! I thought I was done!

One is never done. Over the past 3 years I have carried the following. Things change. You clothes change. Your job changes. Your mood changes. So your carry gun changes.

Alloy Browning High Power
Custom Garthwaite BHP
Glock 19
Sphinx SDP Subcompact
Sphinx SDP Compact
Dan Wesson CBOB
Kahr CW9
Wilson EDC X9
Ruger LCP

These days is is he Wilson EDC X9 for Winter, Spring and fall. The Sphinx SDP Subcompact in summer and the Ruger LCP year round for pocket carry. I am tempted by the Sig P365 but I just cant bring myself to buy a nw Sig. Don't trust them anymore.

@Millie ,
For your grip strength try getting 2 tennis balls and squeezing them to buildup your fingers and hands.

I was also tempted by the p365, until I shot one! Not nice at all. Still love the idea of it, but it was way too recoil-y for me.
I guess I'm headed south pretty soon, so maybe I'll have news in a few days.....

My clothing style doesn't change, I'm retired, my mood is usually good, and I want my p238 and my 1911 9mm to work perfectly all the time, not just sporadically....lol...

I'm pretty sure my grip is ok, but I'll get Billy to look at it soon. (I have no trainer anymore at the range.)
I must say, I'm the common denominator in this situation, so it must be me, but I can't get a handle on what my issue is. Lol.

Notice that I said harder, not necessarily more.

I do a version of this. Satisfying.

Well, what you want and what may actually be reality might be 2 different things. Don’t be afraid to try different guns and change your plan. I love 1911’s, but I suck at drawing them, releasing the safety and shooting them. So I carry guns I can actually use and shoot 1911’s at the range for fun. It took me some time to admit all that, but that is my reality. Maybe the little safety gun isn’t your true best carry gun. No big deal. Lots of guns out there. Go see Billy and shoot lots of guns. You’ll figure it out. At least a dozen times. Then you’ll find a happy place.

Go see Billy and shoot lots of guns.

And when are you gonna get yourself down here? You could swing by Conway, it's right on your way to Jefferson. :)

Ha! Had to go to Charleston a while back for work and was thinking of Billy’s bunk house and guns the whole drive. Between one kid’s v-ball trips, college hunting for the other and trying to get to W. Jeff for relaxation I haven’t had time for anything. Even range time. But the days are getting longer and that is going to change. I think I have a plan. Once it is confirmed you and Billy will be getting a PM. I need to get abused my his drills and range to develop a baseline.

I have three 7 rounders and one flush 6 rounder.

Get rid of the 7 rounders. See what happens. Mine is flawless with 6 rd mags. It's a jam o matic with 7 rd mags. All kinds of failures include the mag releasing even when shot where I cannot hit the mag release. The 7 rd mags are junk.

Ok, I don't want to seem stubborn (though Billy says I am), but why would the 7 rounders all of a sudden start acting up? I've had two of those going for 7 months or so, and they decide to get squirrelly now? It has to be me, not the gun/magazines/ammo....but I don't know what I'm doing differently today. (Well, I'm a year older, but that can't be it, right?)
