Difference between Skeet Guns and Trap Guns

Most trap guns I’ve had were longer barrels and usually single shot if they were high end

The primary difference is the stock shape. A trap target is rising throughout most of it's flight and a trap stock will have a higher comb to compensate for this rise. A skeet target remains mostly flat throughout it's flight so the comb will be more flat or parallel. A trap gun is mainly a single shot unless you're shooting trap doubles where a second shot is required. Skeet is a combination of singles and doubles so the gun must be capable of firing 2 consecutive shots.

Guns for both disciplines need to be rugged, reliable and capable of shooting thousands of rounds before requiring service.

We are shooting trap with the 4-H. My oldest is shooting my Browning Gold Classic Hunter and enjoys it. He's going to shoot it until I think he's ready to step it up a notch and make sure he's going to stick with it.

any advice on what choke is the best for 16 yard trap?

Thank you BB

Depends on his reflexes and how long he rides a bird, personally I shoot either IC or mod, he may need something else.

Look at the distance where he's pulling the trigger and do a backwards calculation to figure it out.

IC = 30/35 yards
Mod = 35 to 40 yards
Full = 40 yards or better....

Most of the youth I've seen over the last 7 years on NC 4H teams have been using MOD
we have always carried tighter chokes to competitions though in case the throwers were further out and/or faster than our practice machine in case we needed them

Practicing with a slightly tighter choke may help your more advanced shooters

This is our 1st year that Duplin County has had a shooting team. I'm the shotgun instructor and I need more help than the kids I believe.

Will you be at the eastern shoot this year?
