Just got off the phone with a lady I could barely understand who told me my SS# has been found on paperwork in a rental car in Chicago, along with 20 kilos of cocaine!! I told her I don't live there, I've never been there, or rented a car there, nor do I deal drugs. She read me a bunch of stuff about the crime, at which point I told her again it's not me, and to go get the real culprit.

She then told me a bunch of stuff about how she's pretty sure I'm not the one doing this, but I'm going to have to prove to her I'm not a criminal. I told her she has to prove I am one.

Things got heated, and she informed me my bank account will be suspended, any benefits I get will be stopped, etc. I told her she better leave all my s*** alone, and to send me all this info in the mail, as that's how the SSA and I communicate. Whereupon she hung up.

Has anyone else run across this? I'm beyond pi**ed off.

Constant scams - I don’t even answer any calls anymore; if someone calls me, they will hear: leave a message with your phone # and I will decide if I want to call you back.

Wow, you spoke to one of the real people? Mine are usually recordings telling me my SSN has been cancelled.
This actually did start as a recording, and when I called back to see what amusing stuff they'd try, I got this non-English-speaking lady.
I should have asked her if she minded being recorded also, since she kindly told me that I was being recorded and monitored.

Just a scam. Hang up or don’t answer if you don’t know the number.

Some people I know call from numbers I don't have in my contacts list, so I kind of need to answer.

Also, if I'm in the right kind of mood, talking with these scammers can provide me with a few minutes of amusement. A lot of the time they get real frustrated with me, and eventually hang up, go figure, and how rude!! LOL. Sometimes they call me names.....it's good for a laugh on a boring day! This lady did get me pretty angry, though, but she hung up first, so I still "won"...childish, I know. It's Monday (I think) so sue me.

Got the same call. Talked to the lady and she asked my name. I figured she was gonna ask for SSN nest but the call disconnected and I called it back. We're sorry your call cannot be completed as dialed.

Do what a friend of mine does and ask what their mom is getting for her B-hole these days?
They either talk in languages he doesn't speak or hangup.

reminds me of my now deceased father-in-law when he got "scam" or otherwise "fake" calls.
he would preach the gospel to them and try to convert them from their heathen ways.
and...if that failed, at least get a faith contribution for his free-will church.

I had one of those a few months ago. Called on my (ONSTAR) car phone. They went on and on and a said wait one second while I connect you to agent Williams of the FBI. They had the gall to hang up on me. I mean I was just trying to be helpful. :)

On the phone, I tell them they need to start calling Chinese numbers because they have all our money.

In emails I tell them that for $25 USD I will correct their grammar so their scam potential will improve.

I work for a Sheriff's Office and I've actually had them call my office phone before, of course the number was a IP address from another country. No matter what phone they call I have a little fun with them, do the whole I'm so concerned and don't want to go back to prison and start talking about how I can make payment, with the only problem being I have no way of making each type of payment they say they will accept. I look at this way, is it a pain in the butt and inconvenient, YES!!! But if they are talking to me at least they aren't talking to an elderly person who may fall for their scam.

Meh...any number I don't recognize goes to voicemail. If they can't be bothered to leave a message, then I can't be bothered to call them back.

And if they do leave a voice message and it's something like this, I just delete the message and never call them back.

The latest for me was last Friday...I got a message from Verizon that my service had been suspended and to call them back, and they left a number that was close to the Verizon Customer Service number.

Instead, I called the usual Verizon Customer Service number (from my cell phone, which service had been "suspended"). Yep...it was a fake. Gave them the number and let them deal with it.

Once got a call on a work cell phone telling me I had tax problems and if I didn't settle up I was going to prison. I laughed at the guy and asked him if he realized he was calling a government phone and how was he going to send Uncle Sam to prison? That was a hang up.

My favorite (though it caused my stomach to tie up in knots) was a robocall I got asking for information on the whereabouts of my ex-wife...call back or they'd sic the police on me. Heh...I haven't had any contact with her in over 25 years...you had the resources to find my phone number, you have the resources to find hers, so bugger off...and if it's THAT important, don't robocall me! I never called their callback number.

(My stomach was tied in knots for several hours in reflex to mention of my ex...what I went through all those years ago STILL affects me that way.)

I think next time I'm going to just play along and "admit" to not paying taxes for the last 15 years, etc. Could be a lot of fun!

My wife has been getting robo like calls on her cell phone with a female voice. The person says her phone has been involved in a security issue and will suspended and shut down if she does not return the call. The number is (330) 475-7179 from Akron Ohio. After googling the number it comes up as a scam. I'm not sure exactly what the end game is on the scam but I've told her not to return any calls like that. She's also been getting calls from out of the country Zimbabwe being one of them and we've started blocking all of them.

The problem with blocking the numbers is they change the ID of the IP phone. So, you block one and the program rolls to the next number and calls again.

Like @RetiredUSNChief I just don't answer unknown numbers anymore. Leave a message, something, and I'll call right back.

I started to get a rash of robo texts. Those are easy to get rid of as I just notify my carrier and they take care of it.

Can't get to post but this reminded me of the confession Chunk gave in Goonies. Sure someone will be kind enough to post it soon.

I had some call and say they were waiting at my house for that roof inspection I was needing. So i told them I had moved so they could meet me at my new address to tell me how much it would cost that I needed the entire thing replaced. I envision someone looking really stupid when they showed up at the courthouse.

My issue with the calls is that the robo dialers have gotten far more advanced in the past few years. I used to get random calls from all over the country...now they are from the same area code. Dealing with foster agencies, school systems, and stuff I don't always have the convenience of letting everything go to VM as it may be something I need to address right then.

My favorite one that I missed, sadly, was one telling me that I was in trouble due to some over due student loans. I haven't been in school for 20 years. If I am passed due on any loans, which I never had, then they can just write that off to "aint happening".

I'm pretty sure a SSN is not required to rent a car. Photo ID on Driver License plus a credit or debit card is all that is required. Don't engage these jerks on the phone, it just encourages them.

I spent some time looking after my Dad, and one call spoofed his own number. It was his own name and number on the caller ID as if he were calling himself!

I once decided to engage a caller from "the IRS" who said I owed some money, and if I didn't pay over the phone they were coming to my house to collect. I thought it would be fun to invite the caller to personally come, but he declined and started to berate me. I screamed at him so much I started to foam at the mouth and almost had a heart attack.

It seems to me with technology racing forward, that cell phone companies would have developed tech to block robo calls much like a spam blocker.
I work for AT&T (but not in the mobility arena). At some point in the last week or two I was watching one of the big webcasts we have and an upcoming release to deal with spam/robot issues was mentioned. Don’t know the details as to what it does or when it’s coming, but I’m sure all the major players are (and have been) working on solutions.

My wife occasionally engages these dipwads for the entertainment value. She keeps an air horn by the phone. Sometimes she fakes an "ESL" issue :p

My favorite, though, was one (and she recorded it to let me hear) was one obviously from some Caribbean island, about paying to collect some money (one of "those"). She strung him along for, oh, 15 minutes. Finally, she told him she knew it was a scam, what he was doing was very dishonest, he needed to get an honest job and quit preying on unsuspecting people, and she would be praying for him. He replied that where he lived, there were no jobs or money, and they had to do that to survive. "At least I didn't come to your house with a gun." She said, "Well, sir, that's good for you, because if you came to MY house with a gun, I'd have to shoot you." Click (from his end). :D

It can be entertaining to string them along. And that was excellent engagement by your wife! Good for her! LOL.

Today I got a call with a recorded lady telling me my SSN has been used in crimes in Texas, and to call this number.

I did, and got a man who could barely speak English. He asked who I was, and I told him they called me, so he must know.

He started to repeat what the lady on the recording said, and I said I got that from the lady, could he get on with it please, and he asked how long ago, and I said 5 seconds.

He said my SSN is being suspended because I did crimes in Texas. He gave his name and badge #, then recited a case # and asked if I was writing all this down. I said I'm recording this, no need to write it down. I thought that might make him hang up, but NO. LOL. He was happy about it.

He blabbed some more, then asked for my DOB and the last 4 of my Social. I said if you're the SSA, you have all that. He said it's for verification, and I said "Well, you called me, do you know who you called?" I said you have all the info on me right there in your computer, so send the paper, as this is how I conduct business with the SSA.

I asked for paper....send me the charges and all the info and I'll give it to my lawyer. I hoped that would do it, but NO....lol.
He said we did send you stuff in the mail. Here I actually said BS. He kept on and on and I did too, saying BS and quit lying and send the paper!

Finally I pissed him off so bad he was yelling about sending the cops to my location because I'm trying to evade the law. I said send them! I'll be home in an hour. (I was sitting outside Jim's, trying to go home.)

He eventually decided I could probably out-last him and gave up. All through this I'm laughing at this poor guy.

So far, I haven't seen any cops, but it's only been a little over an hour, so who knows.....lol.

I did something similar. I love having fun with them. I asked for a call-back number, badge or ID number, all sorts of stuff. When the guy told me they sent stuff in the mail, I told them to resend with signature confirmation or registered mail. It got to the point he just hung up.

When I can get them to hang up....I win! lol.

(I'm childish, I know, but they deserve the exasperation for being a-holes!)

If it's like most telecoms solutions they'll add a $5 fee to the bill and call it fixed.
