NC is a 'sticky' state; interesting population trends

Born in the mountains, lived in Asheboro, Lumberton, Greensboro - military and too many years in MD as a .gov contractor - Lewisville, now Zebulon. I doubt seriously if I will ever leave NC to live again, but I long ago learned to never say never. :)

Lifelong Warren County NC resident. My wife is from MI and I would gladly move there tommorow if I could convince her. The area she is from reminds me of Warren County 15-20 years ago.

My wife is a native of Charlotte born at Presbyterian downtown. Campbell university is as far as she has ever went. I could have left NC not long after getting here but really like the area.
Where are you originally from?
But none of his family had any interest in farming and his kids were to small. So they sold it off little by little.
Same thing happened to my family. Great grandfather had 100+ acre farm. Barely noticed the Great Depression. The family owned much of what is now the west side of Cleveland, Oh. Now the only marker of it is some road names. All the family property got sold off bit by bit as farming died.

We have property now in Chatham Co where were the 3rd family to own it with a title trail going back to the original land grant. It's amazing to think of the humongous swaths of land, thousands and thousands of acres that were effectively gifted after being acquired from the previous occupants.

I'm am from Elkins, WV originally born and raised. I used a topical map to point out the general area look for the green dot. I'm about 45-60 minutes from snow shoe ski resort and 45 from Canaan Valley ski and nature reserve. Anytime the National News or weather channel has a snow storm on the verge they always have Elkins, WV marked because it gets on average 12ft of snow per year. 6 hours or so from my home so I have to tell people it took two tanks of gas to get here so it was a choice.

I grew up in a small town called Chardon, OH. Ed on news 2 has been known to point to that little town and laugh. It gets about 10 feet of snow in the winter. When I was a kid, you wouldn't see the ground from Nov to Apr.

My junior year of high school we got 4 1/2 to 5 foot of snow. I was out of school for 2 weeks because it was a high of about 8-10 degrees for about three weeks. I the Hollar we lived the sun doesn't touch the road but for 2-4 in the afternoon. So the road was not safe for buses for weeks.

I started working in Charlotte 25 years ago and am I'm fking stuck here.
you too huh? Been here since 1992 and I still don't really consider it home.

Originally an Upstate NY farm boy moved south in 1979 and settled in Asheville. Came to Charlotte for college and never made it back. I still miss the mountains.

Originally from Erie, PA, but moved to outside Wilmington, NC, when I was 10. Got my first taste of the “Yankee hate” there and had to fight pretty much every week until I turned 14 and we moved to Wilmington. Besides a year stint when I lived on the Eastern Shore in MD, I have been in New Hanover, Wake or Johnston Co since and don’t plan to ever leave the state

Yep, it's sticky. I came here from Kentucky on a Greyhound bus in 1967 to go to NC State; never left. Have been to other places that I liked for various reasons, but none strong enough to pull me away. I'd rather work with what I've got than start over somewhere else. Unless NC goes solid blue - then I might be looking!

I was born in Greensboro early on a frosty morn-- lived some other places, including Wyoming and Utah, also spent significant time in Florida and California in the service. but always came back.

Originally from TEXAS family traces back to the "Old 300". Moved here in 2000, my wife was born in Wake Co raised in Monroe, she wanted to come home so I made the mistake of saying "if I can find a good job we will move". I would guess I will die and be buried here now.

Oh man, you and me both.

If I could get my wife on board, I'd move back to the West Branch area of MI.

Close enough to Saginaw and Bay City, but only about 45 mins from family land in Waters.
My wife is from Napolean (outside Jackson). When we went up over Thanksgiving last year I saw why Mi is called the "Sportsman's Paradise". My goal in the next year or two is to save up a decent wad of cash and go gun shopping in the local gunshops. The classic deer rifles and grouse guns collecting dust on the used racks blew my mind. I also want to introduce party stores to NC. They are a magnificent invention.

What is a party store?

What is a party store?
The closet thing I can compare a party store to is a good country store located near one of the countless lakes in MI. Most have a meat counter and make an assortment homemade of sausages, jerkys, brats etc in addition to steaks beurgers and the like. They also sell beer/wine/liquor/fishing tackle/smokes and basic groceries. The counter girls are either hot or are former hotties than have been run hard and put away wet.

My wife is from just outside of Buffalo. If you get 6 feet of snow, in one storm. The little town, Elma, always got more snow than the surrounding areas. She said because of lake effect snow they could have a blizzard and 5 feet away they would get an inch of snow. Crazy.

I've been away with the military, and I have family all over the country, but North Carolina is my home.

Drive Thru party stores...they're legit

Tip: You could save up around $50k and buy 50 acres of hunting land in Northern Michigan.
Don't get me started. My wife has 45 acres she inherited from her grandmother that is rented to a local farmer and her family would love to sell us the old family farmhouse for next to nothing. The winters are why my wife left and she swore she would never live through another MI winter.

I have allready named my party store --- Big Bob's SudsnBuds

My wife's family owned from around independence blvd to where the Independence high school currently sits. Her 96 year old grand mother is about to pass and leave the last 2 acres left to her boys. She gave my wife her wedding ring last week and she is the 5th generation it has been passed. Just simple math tells us it is at least 175 years old probably older.

As much as I tell myself I'd like to move to the northwest (Montana or Idaho), reality is that I ain't leaving. Born here; will probably die here.

Love this state.

As much as I love NC born and raises I’m seriously debating a move to Idaho.
