Antique Warbirds

The B52 is an awesome aircraft. The airframe is 60 years old and it just keeps on tickin'.

I remember them at SJAFB in Goldsboro...flying over 70, right over Wilbur's.

Saw that once when driving up 70. I was amazed. Never knew how big they are until seeing that one fly over on approach.

Not sure which one it was, but one of them soared over top my house a few years ago when it was at Concord for the weekend. Pretty cool to have that piece of history overtop your head. Most my neighbors had no idea why I was in the middle of the street staring up at the sky. Idjits!

That was probably Fifi. The Commemorative (was Confederate) Air Force has been flying her for some time. Doc was certified for flight this summer. Both were at Oshkosh. Hopefully @Qball has photos.

Legendary Bf-109 Igniting Its Engine

The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was the backbone of the German Luftwaffe during WWII. It’s speed, firepower and superior numbers made it the plane to be feared by Allied pilots in the skies over Europe.

Nearly 34,000 Bf-109s were built during WWII taking just roles ranging from fighter, escort, bomber, night fighter, recon. It seemed like there was no role that the Bf-109 couldn’t take on with great success. The only real limitation to the Bf-109 was its limited range which resulted in many pilots losing their lives as they ventured from Germany to Britain for combat missions.

“By the end of October 1940, the British had lost 1,149 airplanes, mostly fighters. The Luftwaffe lost almost 1,800 aircraft, one-third of them Bf 109s. For the first time, Hitler had been checked and a few months later he turned East, with devastating consequences.”

It certainly wasn’t the best fighter of the second World War and had issues with limited vision and problematic landing gear, but it certainly got the job done. Only a handful of Bf-109s survived the war and only about four of those are still operational. Take a moment to see one of those rarities come to life and hear the booming sounds of the Luftwaffe fighter in all its glory.

Bomber Day at Oshkosh - 29 July 2017

YouTube user airailimages caught some great footage of FIFI and Doc on “Bomber Day” at #OSH17.

Now before anyone starts complaining about music in the video instead of engine noise, let the videographer explain: “Because the Blue Angels were scheduled to fly later that afternoon, a larger clear zone around the runway had the unintended consequence of putting us where loudspeakers and other unwanted audio varied, depending on the direction of the aircraft. So we salvaged what we could of the ambient engine sounds, but had to drop in music where audio was bad, or where slo-mo was used.”

@Don

You need to come back and join us sir.:)

When I was a dumbass mortar maggot at Ft Sill in '89/'90, our mission was to shoot for the FO & Arty Officer Basic courses. At the end of every Arty OBC, we put on a massive CALFEX- mounted & dismounted infantry, tank platoon, scouts, mortars, arty & close air support. If we were lucky we'd get an F4 or A7 to come in & drop a couple dummies on the impact area.

Dunno WTF they were thinkin', but we're out there, puttin' on the dog & pony show for the Os & a B52 rolls up at treetop/NOE altitude. Holy shit! That gigantic MFer blocked out the sun & turned day into night. By far, one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
