I agree that the 2nd Amendment doesn't protect my right to own a firearm. It merely states that the government knows I have in inherent right to self preservation and that self preservation may manifest itself in my desire to defend the union. The bill of rights was written as restrictions on the government, not as a list of things I get to do.
If they were to come out tomorrow and repeal the 2nd, I would still have a natural right to self preservation which manifests itself in me by a primal urge to continue breathing for as long as possible. The degree to which we allow our self preservation to be outsourced to another dictates how much restrictions on defensive tool use you will allow. Some people, historically proven, are willing to allow this outsourcing to carry them right to the side of the mass grave, while others will take up arms far sooner. It is up to each of us to decide where, on the scale of "WOLVERINES!" and "Mass Grave" we want to end up.
