This is NOT one of those 45 vs 9mm threads. To those pushing 9mm yes, when conditions require it, I carry a 9mm. Usually a CS9. Loaded with RA9T, 147 grain.

And in my dotage, when I can no longer shoot a 45 accurately and efficiently, I may go to a 9mm......if I no longer own a 357 revolver. ;) Regards 18DAI

I carry 9mm, sometimes .380. I shoot a fair amount of .45, but only in matches in a full size 1911.

I carry a 37 Smith in an ankle holster when in long pants plus a NAA 22 Mag in my pocket. When in shorts a 365 Sig or a DW CCO. I sometimes carry a Colt Pony in a pocket holster. I always carry the little NAA. Some days the 37, 365 and the NAA. Just depends what I pick up when going out the door or what’s in the vehicle I am driving.

5 inch 1911 .45acp Wilson Combat CQB loaded with Winchester Ranger T standard pressure 230gr jhp.

I use a tuckable Raven Concealment Phantom kydex IWB for daily carry during the work week and a Milt Sparks leather Versa Max 2 IWB or a Raven Concealment Phantom kydex OWB depending on how I'm dressed other times.
I have never seen a normal sized individual in close fitting business casual attire with shirt tucked in conceal a full sized 1911, or G17 if it’s a bad news day, as covertly as Amp. Beats all I have ever seen.

45 is my favorite handgun caliber and if I had to pick a platform it would a 1911. I used to carry a 1911 but I'm not a big guy and the grip wasn't always the easiest to conceal. I still carry a 45 but moved to an XDs because it's just so easy to carry and I can still spend time with it at the range.

Carry duty is 230gr HSTs.

Would it be a safe bet that there are more people dead from ball then all other bullet configurations?

I qualify yearly with 2 guns. Duty gun new last October is a S&W 2.0 M&P in 9mm. 147 grain Speer Gold Dots. Off duty edc is a Sig P365 stoked with the same 147 grain Gold Dots. Required by the dept since I carry it under their rules. And they give me the ammo,3 mags full. Before I got the P365 I carried either a Glock 19 or a S&W 4 in E series Scandium frame 1911 45 acp in a Desantis IWB holster and loaded with 230 gr Gold Dots

If you count musket balls for sure... A lot of people are killed by 22lr too. Doesn't mean I'm packing my 22/45 as a defensive weapon.

I have a CZ97 and my wife has a Sig P220 that are range toys.
I carry a CZ P01 and she carries a PPQ or a VP9SK.
I have a 442 for when I need pocket sized.
I just knew there had to be something about you I liked.

Turns out...

It’s your wife. :D
she carries a PPQ or a VP9SK.

I carry a 9mm IWB or a 38 S&W in my pocket most days.

I don't have any interest in 45. You get half the ammo capacity and gain very little performance.

Why the distaste for JHPs?
big, all the guns I use and I use a bunch, were manufactured to run on Ball. From my 1903 Colts to the Glocks I have in my pockets. Number 1 for me is reliability!! Don't get pulled into the overpenetration side of ammo selection. Over 80% of all rounds fired by Le are Air Balls, Misses. The chance of overpenetration as compared to misses is not even problem B or c or L here. Our motto here is Presentation-Press-Placement-Penetration.
Bill Wilson wrote in his book that people would spend Thousands of dollars on a gun and then hunt high and low to find a bullet it wouldn't feed. I have to have Reliability, All else takes a back seat. I have to have penetration, All else takes a back seat. Ball ammo provides those two things to me.
Folks who choose the newest and greatest hollow points are spending their own money and should get whatever they choose. Money is hard earned, spend it anywhere you wish. As for me and Most of our shooters here we load the heaviest in caliber FPFMJ we can find.

Carry 9’s unless I am up in the mountains. If I am not on the deck with a small caliber rifle I’m likely carrying an HK45c OWB in a Chief Jason’s leather rig. I really like the 1911 45’s but my stubby little thumbs and manual dexterity make me pretty slow with a safety. Maybe with enough work it would get better, but until there’s time I like my DA/SA guns.
I have a ruger 1911 and I shoot better then handgun I own and man I had a bunch but lost them in a boating accident

Mostly carry 9mm or .38 but I do carry .45acp some. If I do it's in a 4513TSW, Ruger Birdshead NM Vaquero or 1911 cmd. They all are carried with 230gr HST. The 4513TSW and Vaquero get carried in leather just behind the hip strong side iwb or owb depending on what I'm doing. The 1911 gets carried IWB strong side in a summer comfort or AIWB in a kydex holster from JM custom.

I work for a large Dodge/Jeep/Ram dealership and I have a lot of contact with our customers and while I can tell you many of our customers carry concealed, Cant tell you what caliber what they are. But, I can tell you that all our open carry customers have 1911's and I usually see about 2 per week. Since I'm a 1911 guy, its a great conversation starter and makes our customer feel more comfortable when everyone else is staring at the gun and trying to ignore the pink elephant in the room.

Trolling this back up since I didn't feel like creating a new thread-

So, some listed the ammo they carry; many including myself did not.
What say the camp? Who carries their own reloads?
For those carrying store-bought ammo, why?

For the record: my reloads. Reason? Because since I'm not loading everything at the top of the recommended data, I'm not scared to, that's why.

After great reflection and research, I decided to carry ONLY factory SD ammo. My decision was based almost entirely on one undeniable fact of the universe...

I don’t reload. :D

I try to choose a round that is in common use by law enforcement. Eliminates the ammo selection from any civil suit that may be brought after the fact.

Also, while I don’t find LEOs to be the be all and end all of “shooting” knowledge, they do get in quite a few shoot outs and spend a decent time as a whole doing research on what does and doesn’t work.

I reload some, but considering how little self defense ammo I shoot in a year it’s just easier to buy a few boxes and cycle them out a little here and there to keep them fresh. I don’t think a “he loaded his own Bullets so he made them extra dangerous” would really hold well in court, but why even risk it when the alternative is literally just sitting on a shelf.
