Dennie is a miniature dachshund who is 17 years and 8 months. Chart says she is about 90 in human years. She cannot see more than a couple feet and has no hearing. Cannot eat now without her legs going out from under her. Cannot keep any food down. Wife wanted to have the talk a month ago. I ignored it but it’s more than time.

What a great family member she has been. Grew up with my kids and slept in somebody’s bed every night until two years ago. Never gave us any trouble and followed me everywhere. I was the provider all these years. Feeding, bathing, and playing.

Made a casket yesterday out of pine. Sealed and painted the box. Kids wanted to cremate her but she grew up here and she will rest here. Got a tractor to dig me a hole in this cement like dirt. Just waiting for my daughter to be able to be here in the morning when the vet comes to put her to sleep at 9:00am. Gonna miss my girl.

Sorry for your loss, it's not easy but is is a responsibility we take when we bring them into our family and our hearts. Just went through this last weekend and again today...never gets easier.

I know how hard it is to let her go, prayers for you and your family

Its gonna be a tough day. I feel for you man.

Glad to see you're doing right by your girl. She'll be waiting happily just across the RB.

Sounds like she has had a rather wonderful life. I'm sorry it's time for that. I had to do that a few months ago, still stings a bit. I just hope somebody will be that merciful to me when it's time.

Dude, my heart breaks for you. I'm pretty sure your best girl ever will be there, waiting patiently for you on the other side, when your own time comes.

Dachshunds are such funny, loving, loyal little dogs & I will be crushed when ours begin to pass.

remember the good times.
in March, we did the same for our 17-year-old Chloe.
she was the last of our three girl dogs.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone – wherever it goes – for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

Guy who is a neighbor dug my hole for me while he was digging around his house to seal for water leaking. 30 minutes after he left here he dug up the gas line at his house and the police, three fire trucks, and a chief car came and blocked off the streets. May I add we dug up two of my gutter drain lines trying to miss the sewer drains for the burial plot. Got some work ahead but thankfully the gas line two houses down didn’t blow us up. Feel sorry for the guy.

Thanks for the condolences. I’ve had a number of dogs but dachshunds are by far the most loyal lap dogs. They are funny too. Like to hide under everything and peak out under covers. But don’t be fooled. They are ferocious and fearless. They are very protective of family in the house. She never bit anyone but you do not touch a person in this house while she is watching. Hugs are forbidden until she is out of the room. Don’t be fooled by the lack of size. They do not play well with strange dogs. They go for the throat. Squirrels, rabbits, birds in backyard- instant death. Moles- dug up and dead.

Your dog has good genes, 17 years plus, that is amazing. Do you have papers on the dog, you could get a certified pedigree,
three generations, would be nice to frame it with a nice photo of the dog.

I do not have any papers. A family got her and decided she was cramping their life style so my kids wanted her. She was 8 weeks old.

Your dear girl wanted to go out in a flash!

Condolences.
The day’s coming for our old girl, it’s weighty.

I'm sorry to hear this, but she'll be waiting for you on the other side.

Hard decision but sounds like the right one. My thoughts are you you. It’s hard losing a FAMILY member...

Man, I hate it for ya but it sounds like you know the time has come. We are all praying and hoping that time will ease the pain of your loss but that the memories remain fresh forever.

I have walked in your shoes.......and it's a tough decision to make, but sometimes it's necessary. I'm guessing at that old age......Dennie has had a great life and you were a big part of it. Remember that you helped give Dennie a good life and that's all that matters when its all said and done...... I will have Margie greet him at the bridge.

Very sorry for your loss. It is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to face. It’s also one of the kindest, most selfless things you can do too, You have my sympathy.

Doing the right thing isn't easy.
Keeping you in our thoughts today.
