i thought this was awesome and just wanted to share with anyone looking for a cheap date idea or just something cool to do with the wife after the kids go to sleep. Now that I think about it, kids would probably like it too.

So for the last several years the wife and I will randomly pull out an air mattress after the kids go to sleep and lay outside looking up at the stars. We mostly look for shooting stars and flying objects that don’t make noise which we figure are drones watching everyone. She likes it and it’s an easy way for us to spend some time alone doing something away from the kids. Well, I heard about an app called sky guide that you use on your phone or tablet and you just turn it on and point the camera up in the sky and it shows the stars you’re looking at. It tells you the names of the stars and shows how the constellations line up. We don’t have any kind of telescope or equipment to zoom in but I would assume this app would be a good investment for folks into stuff like that as well.

Anyway had an awesome night last night with several shooting stars. If you guys can get out and check out the stars, they’re pretty cool.

You can see an amazing amount with binoculars. I learned this in an astronomy class a few years ago. I'd stop on the way home from class and park the car and sit and watch the sky through my binoculars....incredible!
(Still working on the other person to go watch with me.)

wait, did you BUY that app for three bucks?
Bro, FREE apps

Millie watches heavenly bodies. ;) Easy to spot Cassipeia, just remember 'Case of Beer'.

Check out Star Gazers on PBS, program for naked eye astronomy. First episode was in 1976!

"Greetings, greetings, fellow stargazers and ends with his signature phrase "Keep looking up!" Jack Horkheimer

Ahh when I mentioned the idea to her it was the first one that popped up so I hold her to go ahead. Free would have been a little better but it was definitely worth the $3.

I have always watched the stars. god gives me a meteor shower every birthday.. last time I counted 80 in an hour. it does make me aware of light pollution.
