Last night had the beginnings of a great night. The wife was going to take the 2 yr old to her mother's house about 300 yards down the road and stay the night. Her mother is a couple days home from surgery and is doing good, just staying just in case anything is needed.
So I'm thinking I'll get the bed to myself, no 2 yr old kicking me all night, no getting up and down...bla bla bla.
Everything is fine, the dog gets up and wants to go outside about 330. As I let her out, I hear a car turn off the hwy squealing wheels around the turn. Think to myself that's not smart as there is a 90 degree curve about 125 yards from the hwy, but they always wreck in the curve heading towards the hwy, so whatever.
Get the dog to come back in, and just as I lay down the wife calls. Seems there's a car in the front yard of her mothers house and the powers out. Awesome
Get dressed, walk outside and can hear a radio, get around the curve and all I can see is the wife's Forester on its side. Get out of the truck and realize the power line is down across the road. Get up to the house and can now see the car in the yard. It's come to rest on the light pole that drops the power to the house. By this point I'm pissed off. I'm standing in the yard/road in the pitch black with crappy music playing way too loud. I'm looking around for the driver, start towards the car thinking I'm going to find a body. Nobody in the car.
Start looking around the yard near the car, nobody. No one walking around, no body in the grass. I go up to the house and ask the wife if she's call 911. Yep they're on the way. I decide to go look around some more, about 20 foot from the car on the other side of a tree I spot movement. Shine the flashlight and I'll be damned, there's the driver, sitting up, mumbling. Yep, drunk.
EMS pulls up, I show them where the driver is, and then go sit on the porch. 1 firetruck, 1 amberlamps, and a mgmt ems truck. Amberlamps loads the driver up and leaves. Head EMS guy is walking around taking pictures, looking over the debris field that stretches probably 300 feet. We talk some, power company trucks show up and drop the lines. It's been about an hour and half, still no Trooper. There's been at least 4 big wrecks in the county, and we are about 2 miles from the northbound line. I start walking around again, just looking at all the crap in the yard. About 10 feet from the front of the car I spot a holster, then a pmag, then, yep that's a handgun. At this point all the firefighters and ems across the street killing time. I ask if they saw the handgun laying in the yard...nope the 10 head walking around missed that. The Trooper finally shows up, does his thing. Tow truck driver starts picking up. I start walking around again and this time find his phone another 20 feet from the car, Trooper says to toss it in the car. The Trooper finally lets the car be moved. Now the power company can start replacing the poles and get the power back on to the house. The Trooper finally leaves. It's daylight at this point. The power company finally gets out of the way and my tow truck driver and start to get the Forester out of the driveway. A little after 8ish the tow driver is gone, the powers back on, and I can go back to the house and maybe sleep.
The driver lost it in the curve, dropped off the road and the front end hit the 1st driveway out of the curve. At that point he's airborne for about 50 feet, looks like he was flipping end over end from the 1st divot in the yard where it hit. Then airborne again for another 35 feet or so till he hit the first light pole, breaking into 3 pieces, while smashing into the passenger side of the wife's Forester, knocking it over on it's driver side. From there he hit the ground again about 25 feet from the Forester. Back into the air for about 20 feet till he hit another light pole, cracking it about 12 feet off the ground. His car then slid/fell down the now leaning over pole, sitting there like he parked it. At some point in his barrel rolling he left the bounds of the drivers seat, exiting out the sun roof, landing through a Fir tree about 20 feet from where the car stopped. 3 yards have damage, the MIL's driveway is missing the lamp posts, the Dogwood tree that was by the 1st light pole is gone. The middle section of the 1st light pole is about 50 feet in front of the 2nd light pole. There is mud and limbs and misc car parts over 4 yards. No point in changes the blades on the mower till the end of the season now.
Now, might seem like I don't care much about the driver, and you're right, I can't stand a damn drunk, driving around. They usually leave a path of death and destruction in their wake, while they a lot of the time just walk away. Well this story has a happyish ending, He's fine, got some stiches and bruises, maybe a broken bone or two. If he's over 21 it's not by much. I said happyish because he's probably not having a great day. He admitted to being drunk to the EMS, thought he was on the other side of the county. The car he driving was a 2019 with 30 day tags, it's totaled. The wife's Forester is totaled. The power company is going to bill for who knows how much.
tldr; Drunk driver totaled my parked car, along with a couple light poles.
I realized after I found the handgun in the yard, that while I specifically looked at the guys hands first. He was out of sight when I went to the road the flag the Amberlamps and keep them from driving into/over the downed service drops. I shouldn't have. The last drunk driver crash, I was able to watch him climb out the hatch of a fox body mustang and he kept his distance til he left in his buddy's truck. I dropped my guard on this one, not thinking he was possible threat, while he could have been. Lesson learned.
