What do you hunt with most?

This year I will be using my Remington 783 in 6.5 creedmoor. Shoots 140gr federal fusions in 3/4" groups at 100yds so if I do my part the deer should drop. The reason for a 6.5 creedmoor is I hate having tons of different calibers.

Deer: Tika T3 7mm-'08 w/ Vintage Leupold VariX ll 2-7 x 40c
Sierra Pro Hunter 140 gr. handloads.
Dove : Toss-up between 1938 Mod 12 Winchester 12ga.
OR Browning Citori 20 ga.

My tendency to overthink shooting deer is a contributing factor in my yearly search for the perfect deer rifle. Without fail I end up using my Bergara B-14 Hunter in 308 or my Bison Armory 18" 6.8 SPC and the new rifle gets left in the safe or traded off after shooting the obligatory doe. That said I have high hopes for the 26" HB Howa HS Precision 6.5 Creedmoor I bought a few months ago after convincing myself I needed a damn beanfield rifle. Regardless of caliber I want a bullet that will blow through a shoulder. If I am hunting thick areas/woods I generally use an old beat to hell H&K stamped Benelli M1-Super 90 or Remington 870 Special Field and 00 Buckshot.

With a .308, a 12 ga, and a .22 a person could hunt 90% or more of all animals in the USA.

But most of my NC deer hunting shots have been less than 65 yards, so a 30-30 with a 4x scope it what I grab 90% of the time

My son has access to almost any cartridge that he wants or needs. He hunts exclusively with a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem with a Leupold VX1 2-7x33. I have seen him shoot a running deer twice offhand with it at 100+ and drop the animal.

It's not the arrow, it's the brave with the bow.

But. But. But. That’s like false advertising, I guessed a 303.
LMAO!! I hunted with a 303 for years until I discovered the 6.8 SPC. Still shoot my Enfield at the range, but prefer the ergonomics of the AR. They can be adjusted to fit anyone.

I love my Marlin .30-30, but the 6.8 AR shoots sub-MOA, has a much flatter trajectory, feels lighter & is more compact. Not to mention that Nosler 110gr Accubonds flat work.

FWIW, I only take it afield with 5rd mags (with 2 5rd spares in my bag).

I haven't done any serious hunting in a few years, but back when I did, I went to the woods with a Marlin 336 in 30-30.

Its light, handy, and got plenty of power for southern whitetails under 150 yards. Marlin's have a solid top receiver so mounting optics is just as easy as a bolt gun.

Most of your deer hunting in NC is going to be shorter range stuff in woods or brush. No need for the various high speed magnums.

Nothing like blowing through a shoulder.

a .308 is a NC beanfield rifle lol

That is debatable. I hunt some power lines and Ag fields where 500-600 yds shots are a possiblity. I have shed most of my Fuddish tendencies but David Petzal is my gun guru. He considers the 308 a poor choice for a bean field rifle and no amount of reeasoning will change my mind. That said, as much as it saddens me I will likely do 99% of my hunting with my 308.

But the bow and arrow are much more fun than being the Indian.

I have gotten flack for my love of shoulder shots but I would much rather loose 4lbs of stew meat than the entire deer. Deer hunting has been a life long passion but I still love to kill them. While I dont consider it hunting I shoot a lot of deer on depredation permits---I have several family members who expect me to shoot any deer I see in their bean fields.

I don’t get it but apparently there are some that do.

I had an Rem700 .308 that I used for pig once, then had it built into a 300WSM by Spartan Precision to use on elk in Wyoming. Did that, then did one of those goofy pig and alligator hunts down in Florida and ya know what? 300WSM is a touch overkill for sub-200 yard shots on critters that aren't elk sized.

For small stuff, I have a savage 17HMR, and birds an old mossberg 500.

I've never tried deer, but I suspect I would have to use this since it's my 'hunting rifle'.

When I have a place to hunt............... Model 7 in 243 running 107's.

Marlin 30/30 for brush but I do own a Tikka T3 light in 30-06. I use it for hunting long range and have yet to shoot anything with it. It’s zero’d at 200yds and will tear a 6” plate to pieces at 800yds. With work and competition I barely get in the woods more than twice a year.

Probably killed the most with a savage 110 in 30/06. Next in line would be various mosins I’ve had, then the 12 gauge. I wouldn’t still have the 06 but it’s my wife’s favorite and she’s killed a few with it. I used my grandpas marlin 3030 almost exclusively last year.

These are my three favorites.

.30-'06 Sako L61R action, Fajen Mannlicher stock, Douglas barrel, Williams sights. Add all those parts together and they were sold as "Harrington Richardson 301 Ultra Rifle"...early 1970's

Ducks and turkeys are shot with an A5 Browning 12 gauge 3" I got back in the 1970's. I use the same with #4 buckshot for deer driven by dogs in the swamp. I favor a SxS 20 gauge for doves, quail, and squirrels. Most of the deer I have shot fell to either a M70 7mm Rem Mag or an early BAR in 30/06. I have shot deer with a whole bunch of different rifles and chamberings from 223 to 375 H&H. Deer are not hard to kill if you can hit them. I have several stands from which I can see quite a long way. I have seen many deer that were way to far for me to try to shoot with absolute confidence that I could hit them with a clean killing shot. Using a high velocity round with a high magnification scope lets me extend my sure-hit range out a bit. The extra power does not really let me kill them better once they are hit but does let me hit them better. I do not like to shoot at anything over about 300 yards although I regularly practice at 400. I have killed elk with M70 Winchesters in 7mm Rem Mag and in 338 Win Mag. I have not yet decided what I will use this year for deer if I am able to get out to the farm for a few hunts this season. I do have a M70 in 30/06 all sighted in and ready if I can get away from the house for a while.

Depends on what we're hunting. Have had a AR platform in my hands around the world since 83'. Taken squirrels and deer with 5.56 and other things. I have look through the sights of my XM16E1 at African Elephants at dusk. Didn't take the shot thou. Last time I went to Africa took a M14 instead.

I’ll play.

The newer model Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 with a Nikon 3x9x40. I added a YHM Turbo to it. Perfect for all my NC and MI hunts.

Dropped one on Wednesday with a 62gr Barnes TTSX at about 140 yards. Put it in right behind the shoulder, took out both lungs and the bullet (solid copper) still exited the other side. He jumped up in the air, made it about 15ft away and he was dead. 16” 223 Wylde (Rainier Ultramatch), Optimus Micro, and my 3.5x ACOG. He wasn’t a massive 200lber or anything but he wasn’t puny. A piece of copper with a ballistic tip going ~2900fps is no joke

Savage 22lr rifle. I do mostly rabbit though. For deer most my,life it has been a 3030 of some sort.

Growing up didn't matter what it was my old man shot it all with a 22lr rifle. Headshots were the name of the game, but the range was always bowshot distances

Mossberg atr in .270. 3x9 scope, rem corelok soft point 150gr.

Most deer never took a step. Had one that was running past, grunted to stop him , he ran 70 yards after the hit and laid down.

It was what I could afford at the time, and still gets the job done. Also not finicky about ammo like my buddy's Remington 700.
