I was in a discussion with a friend about this not too long ago.

1) Have any of you done this and if so, what were the reasons for it? I'm just curious. As usual.

2) And what calibre did you decide on to be your "one and only"....and what reason(s) did you have for choosing that particular one?

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my curiosity...lol.

Yes, I did this. I decided on 9mm for rationalization of an ammo inventory.

Soon after, I decided on .22, then .380, then .38, then .45, then .40, then .32, then .44, then .357, then .41, then 5.56.

I’m quite proud of myself.

Handguns started with .22 and 9mm then added .347 .38spl, .40S&W and the .45acp...then the .380. Also 5.56 and .308 plus 7.62 for the rifles.

I consolidated once. Got rid of everything except 9mm.
Then my teenage daughter decided she wanted to learn to shoot, so I got a .380
Then my son got old enough to start learning and I got a .22
Then my wife bought a .45, cuz, well, she wanted it.
Then I got a .38 for summer pocket carry.
Then I got a .45 cuz, well, the missus aint makin no punk outta me.
It was at that point I realized I have an addiction and now I no longer care lol

If ammo ever gets scarce again like it did from late 2012 to whenever it was after Sandy Hook, you’ll wish you had multiple calibers because if you can’t find one, you might be able to find another.

I feel so much better now. :D

I've consolidated up to: 22 LR, 38 Special, 357 Mag, 9 MM, 45 ACP and 45 LC.

I did it with .38/.357 as a reboot phase when offloading some stuff I inherited. Now I have 9mm and .32acp back in the mix. .22 LR has always been there too.

At the time 9mm & 380 were unobtanium, 40S&W, 7-08 and others were on the shelves.

and don’t forget .22LR due to the old guys scarfing it up at Walfart and then gouging on armslist.

I got lucky and split a pallet with a friend, sold a bunch for 1-2 cents over what we paid same price as WM sold it for, ended up with a bunch of free ammo, and many happy other folk.

Well, mine went: .380, 9mm, .38, .45, .22....
I love the idea of just one ammo to deal with, but I love shooting all the guns I have! I can't just do one calibre!
You need one more caliber 10mm Glock 20

Nope! I got enough going on as it is! You're trying to start trouble, aren't you??? LOL. (If I do get another Glock it will probably be in .45 or .380. I need to shoot a G21.)
fatter frame than the 9mm grocks. Get a G21SF (slim/skinny/svelte frame) if you do
I still don’t like the Glock frames in 45acp, and I have big hands.
FWIW I owned the G21 SF and G30SF. Great shooters but the frame is different than the 9mm blocks.

I gotta find/rent some and shoot them first. But if the grip is TOO skinny, I won't like it much.

Millie, consolidation down to a certain number of types is a great idea ... in theory ... but hard as hell to stick to. I have “trimmed” down the number but because I love certain specific firearms I’m not able to cut some like the M1 Carbine which is a great example of me owning and having only the 2 carbines that shoot .30 Carbine. I do try to keep the number to a minimum and lately been successful but if you enjoy shooting keeping it to low is about the best I can say.

It’s not skinny, believe me. That’s just what the SF stands for. It’s fatter than any Glock 9mm.

@Millie there's always a G21 around when you're in Conway. Billy and I both have them. You can wrap your paw around one next time. Or, part of the way around one. :) Mine's not the SF, not sure about Billy's.

I have a G21 and a G30sf that I'll be glad to bring to BO on 10/19 if you haven't already shot/bought/broken/replaced ;) one of each by then. Let me know and I'll pack 'em.

I am trying to do just that, and apparently I am the only one. But I will qualify that by saying that I treat .22lr as an exception outside the process.

I further freely admit that, while I am down to two, I have stalled because even though I know which I should keep, I just haven't been able to bring myself to let go of the other.

I am not rushing the process, and I will eventually decide. I think. o_O

I think it’s good to make sure you stock up on your “main calibers”, but diversity can be fun. Some days I like plinking with a .22, some days blasting away with a 10mm.

I even toss around the idea of buying ammo for a gun I don't own yet!
A friend gave me a box of 22-250.
Now I have to buy a rifle in 22-250. It is the law.

But if the grip is TOO skinny, I won't like it much.
She says she doesn't like the skinny ones.
Good thing this is in the open in-front-of-God-and-everybody forum cause if it was in the basement we'd be running with it.

Next time you come across a 4x4 post...wrap your hand around it. It's the same size as a 45 cal. Glock.

I suggest that you stockpile the caliber that you think you’d shoot the most during a shortage, and not worry that you’re shooting several calibers while ammo is plentiful.

Several years ago I consolidated everything down to 3 calibers: .22, 9mm, and .223. All my handguns are 9mm except for one .22. Easier to stock up on ammo for me.
