A wild after-school brawl erupted Monday outside a Long Island strip mall, and when it was over, a 16-year-old student was gravely wounded with a stab wound to his chest.

But most of the 50 or so teenagers in Oceanside, New York, who either took part in the fight or witnessed it made no attempt to defend him. In fact, some stood by recording the fight and his suffering on their cellphones, the police said.

The victim, Khaseen Morris, died at the hospital.

“Kids stood there and didn’t help Khaseen,” Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Nassau County Police Department said in a news conference Tuesday. “They videoed his death instead of helping him.”

So, here's yet another example of our "People Problem" but this one doesn't involve a firearm.

People (a group) need direction. They will stand around waiting for someone to take the lead or initiative. That's one reason we have emergency management plans with assigned responsibilities, so people know who is supposed to do what. BUT, this is still terrible and it's a shame that there wasn't a leader/free thinker in the group.

Yup. Psychologically speaking you are more alone in a big crowd than a small group. Everyone assumes someone else will take the initiative.

Not to excuse this behavior of filming, which is indeed heinous, but I certainly wouldn't want my child jumping in to "defend" another kid from a knife attack.

We don't even expect police to do that.

As a parent Im going to say that if it was my kid I would want them to GTFO right away, but certainly not stick around and video it. As an adult for myself if I was there I would hope that Id have the ability to do something to help the victim while doing my best to stay safe myself.

Its also the reason that in CPR training they teach you to point at someone and tell THEM to call 911 instead of just saying call 911

I did that in an emergency and the person nearby wouldn't or couldn't call. I had to run to my nearby house and grab my phone to call 911

Was this the same 50 kids that invaded the Walgreens a few weeks ago?

I hope I have raised my kids to know better than to be one of 50 teens at a strip mall brawl

People also have ingrained in their mind that they could be sued for doing something as opposed to not being sued for doing nothing.

By the way, is the Good Samaritan law still valid in NC?
