I’m wanting to start making some knives. What’s everyone using as their intro belt grinder? The harbor freight one or what? I’d love to have a 2x72 but dang the price is high for a starter grinder.

I have a 1x42 Delta and a 4x36 Ryobi that have served me well for awhile.

On second thought my Ryobi is a 4x36....

What do y’all think of this?

I think the amount of belt exposed will limit your versatility. Unless you can take that deck off.

When you get to the bigger knives you need room to move on both sides of the belt.

The adjustable deck would be handy on small or "regular" size knives. But it would be in my way on the larger ones. YMMV of course.

I haven't looked in awhile but at one time you had more belt variety in 1x42 than 1x30 as well.

Just some info

.

That looks awesome. The scary part is that he said it was at the price performance sweet spot (at about $2K for what he had) and that some grinders were just ridiculously expensive. Must be really nice grinders!

I will. Got a free treadmill today. Got the motor out. Now just got to get a drive wheel and the other three wheels for it. I’ll post pics for sure. Building a forge too so I’ll make one big post about it.

The Harbor freight belt grinders are weak and slow. I have 3x36 that I have to "kick start" sometimes
My 1x30 bench grinder may be noisy due to cheap bearings but it's not weak or slow. I've sharpened everything from kitchen knives to mower blades to machetes with it. Plus the leather strop belt from Amazon is the proverbial feline's rectum

You need some big brake drums for the forge?
