Buried my father-in-law yesterday. We found him Thursday morning in the bedroom, asleep in his easy chair. He was an Officer and a Gentleman. Lt. William Oliver Jones, USN. He served aboard the USS Kearsarge as a radio equipment operator on the early propeller driven, carrier based AWAC's, during the Vietnam era. If you've ever been to Patriot's Point, that was the sister ship. We spent a Scouting night there once, exploring the ship as he reminisced.
He was buried with honors, with a real bugler playing Taps and the flag ceremony. Also, by his request, Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, with the piper in full regalia.
He was a great man and I mourn his passing.

....till Valhalla.

Prayers for your family...sounds like a man full of honor and full of years, a life well lived.

Glad to know that you had a live bugler instead of an honor guard member holding a "digital" bugle which just plays a recording.

For those of you who are veterans or who have veterans in your families, know that they are entitled to having military honors at their funeral. Also know that Bugles Across America (www.buglesacrossamerica.org) will provide a live bugler for your funeral ceremony. It's a free service provided by a charitable organization, staffed entirely by volunteers.

Condolences to your family.

I'm looking into one of those medallions for Mom's headstone, but since she served so long ago, it may take time for them to find her records.
I didn't know she was entitled to any honors....guess I didn't really know much about her service. I feel bad about that.

I'm sorry that you missed out on having military funeral honors for your mother. Many people don't know, which is one reason I volunteer with Bugles Across America. There are plenty of veterans & not many buglers.

My condolences on your family's loss. RIP Lt. W.O. Jones.

Very sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry for your loss, he sounded like a great man.

All 3 members of our honor guard were active duty Navy, including the bugler. ;)
They all looked highly decorated.

Millie, I'll ask my wife who she called to make arrangements for the honor guard. Maybe they can guide you on the medallion. I believe they are going to send one to us. I think you only need to provide a DD214 discharge document and maybe a death certificate.

I have a death certificate, but not the discharge papers. Don't want to derail this thread, though. My condolences.

My sincere condolences.
Thoughts and Prayers for your wife and your family.

Sorry to hear of your family's loss.

Sorry for the loss of your FIL, prayers of comfort for you and family.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

As a humorous aside... Here is a line from his obituary that was put in to reflect his character... Kind of an inside joke.

Bill enjoyed fine cigars with his good friends at McCranie's and was a property owner in Lynchburg, TN.

Does anyone know what the last part is referring to?

Hint: He was a squire. ;)

As her NOK, you can get her full service record here.

Fair winds and following seas, Lt. Jones ... and welcome home! My condolences to his family.
