does anyone know the rules [ law ] for going thru MARYLAND i`ve got to go thru there to get to pa. i`d rather drive around maryland but heard it`s a hassle -

I can't find it right now but there was recently a long thread about this very subject with folks suggesting alternate routes, which roads to take, not to take, etc.

http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/maryland.pdf

Look at the bottom of page 7. There is no apparent provision in MD law allowing you to transport a firearm through the state, but federal law allows it.

I don't know the definition of "interrupt your trip while in MD." So fill up, visit the bathroom and other necessities before entering MD.

I believe it's the same with Washington, DC which you will probably have to travel through. Your last safe stop seems to be Alexandria or Arlington.

I am not an attorney, so don't think my advice is any good.

That second thread was one I started. I guess I should have posted an after-trip report.

We took 86 to Danville, then 29 to Charlottesville to get over to I-81 via I-64. I-81 is good road and flows smoothly even with heavy traffic.
I stopped in West Virginia at Exit 23 (Falling Waters) to gas up and put the toys in the trunk. Got back on I-81 and found an 18 wheeler headed north. Got a couple of car lengths behind him and made the 15 minute drive thru enemy country without incident. There is a Pennsylvania Welcome Center about a mile after you cross into PA. Pulled over and reloaded myself.

If you get on the PA Turnpike at Chambersburg be sure to stop at the unmanned tollbooth and take your ticket from the ticket machine mounted on the outside of it. I didn't and it cost me $43 to get off in Gettysburg. (It was only $14 coming home after I found out about the ticket machine).

Coming back I just packed everything away in the car before leaving the hotel. Stayed at the speed limit all the way back to West By-God Virginia. Stopped at Exit 20 for a pit stop at a fast-food place and got my gear back on for the rest of the trip home.

The getting from US 29 over to I-81 is "Scenic" if you don't stay on I_64. Especially at night.

When we went to DC in April about two hours into the trip we took a break. I looked at my brother in-law and said I hate this trip without anything. He said wait why didn't you bring your gun?? Freaking idiot had his pistol with him and we stayed like .5 mile from the White House. Every time he acted like a dick I would whisper in my wife's ear "911 and we get a 3-5 year break."

If you are going to be taking a longer route through the state, just lock up your guns(unloaded) in your trunk. Federal transportation laws cover you.

I’m from NJ, hence my name, and go up to visit family a few times every year. As much as I would prefer to carry everywhere, the risk of getting pulled over with out of state plates, hassled and potentially arrested is simply not worth it. Maryland and NJ are the worst too. I actually take 77 —> 81 to avoid MD & DC.

As usual, your situational awareness will be much more useful than your ccw. Keep your visit short and get home safe.

Be sure to check the vehicle for any ammo, fresh or spent.
MD and DC consider any components, even a spent primer or hull as ammunition. The look for out of state plates.

This is from my phone pic gallery... 18US Code 926a.

Copy this and have it handy on your phone or on paper. If you are pulled, show it to the cop. The don't want a lawsuit.

This is insane, we have a right to carry a gun in any state in the USA......

“shall not be infringed “ does it mean something else?

I’m I missing something hear? Infringe on my rights....sounds like somebody is going against the constitution and a state needs to be brought back into the fold.....happened before, might again.

Try that in NYC and see what happens.

Try using common sense too. Why would anyone be driving "through" NYC? It's not on the way anywhere, especially anywhere that's gun friendly. You have to be legal where you came from and in your destination and you are only passing through. If you are sight seeing, you're visiting, not passing through. You can stop for gas, directions, maybe a meal along the way (ideally not at all), but you aren't there to visit.

I've heard the horror stories too. Stay out of NY. That won't fly in Philly. Maryland and Massachusetts are just waiting to pull every NC tag over and illegally search you...

Bunch of fear mongering based on stories from idiots who didn't know how to handle themselves. I've never heard of anyone being arrested that's actually following the law. It's always some dummy who just tossed his Pistol in the glove box loaded and his wife told the cop, or some dummy that decided Mass was a good place to get a hotel room for the night and brought his gun in with him. Or someone who didn't even bother to remove their CCW at all and gets pulled for speeding/tags/tail lights and OFFERS THE INFO to the cop...

If you are in the right, and not being an idiot(read; don't break the law on your trip) you have next to no chance of interaction with law enforcement in any meaningful way. If you want to live in fear of "the stories" have at it. I've traveled through "enemy territory" many, many times. Never had a problem I didn't create.

Be real... You don't currently have a right to carry in all states. That's just how it is. It's not new and it's not a surprise to anyone here.

You do have a right to pass through any state with a legally possessed firearm if you do it accordingly.

Hold on a second, are you saying that the constitution doesn’t apply to all states? Didn’t a civil war start because some states want something and others want to stop it and we all had to fight so we all have the same?

Slavery is a awful and terrible thing and I’m glad we are all equal and have the same rights in all states so shouldn’t we all have the same rights in all states? What gives some states the right to dictate what we can and cannot have or do? I thought this was the land of the free, anywhere in the USA...and yes I know states have their own laws blah blah blah but when it infringed on mine rights where is the line?

and your right it’s no surprise to anyone here on this forum but it is sad
and a shame....

Start another thread... You're way beyond the parameters of this one...

OK, here's three cases for you.

And then there's this, which could also be filed under "why no one in your car should say anything to a cop".

Jesus Christ... Did you read my posts before quoting? You have 4 cases of dummies. One stupid woman who screwed her husband by saying the gun may be in a number of places in the car illegally and 3 people stuck in an airport who were dumb enough to accept their luggage.

That is no cases for me...

Y'all live in terror of the man based on unfounded fears and obscure happenstance with limited information if you want to. The fact is, you have about as good a chance of winning the lottery as having one of these supposedly "common" occurrences...
