How hard is it to learn how to grade on a skidsteer? I've watched several videos and it feels like something I can tackle. It doesn't have to be deadset level... I just need to grade out of washouts around the property.

If you are looking for general leveling you would probably do better with a tractor and box blade than a skid steer unless you are having to move a lot of dirt into the area to level it.

I have to do a different sort of grading in my job. Unfortunately, not with a skidsteer. Just a red pen.

Can't help with the kind you're asking about. However, I am planning to get a rear blade for my tractor and try to fix up a road on my property. So I guess I better watch this thread.

Just rent one and go to town. That’s your best bet on learning. Buddy of mine got a job at a grading company having never run equipment, boss man would drop him off and tell him to move this big pile of dirt over there. And that’s how he learned to operate.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll get some pictures of the washouts. I will need to move a lot of dirt in most likely.

I'd say that it took me a couple of hours to get dialed in using a box blade or the bucket to level some spots around our property....start somewhere where you can't see / don't care about.

I would say it depends on many factors experience and quality of work you expect and ground conditions space to work in. If your somewhat use to running equipment its not bad and just takes practice. If you have never been around equipment well the learning curve will be pretty steep if you are planning on having it really smooth like a yard or drive. Not impossible just have realistic expectations and if you are renting the machine you can get a large bill and mess in a hurry you have to pay someone else to clean up if your not careful.

I’ll be down as far as my hand for a few more weeks probably Chris, but if it’s gonna be that long before you plan on doing it, give me a little notice and I may be able to come down and run it for you on a Saturday or Sunday if you get it for the weekend.
If you need dirt, visit local construction sites. Lots of times they’ll bring you a load or two to be able to get rid of it

It wont take you long to learn just moving dirt. The problems would be around obstacles and moving too much at a time (tip over).
  • Some rake work will be needed.
  • Add up the total cost that includes transport to/from.
  • Go slow and deliberate.
  • Get extra fuel
