I can't justify a pistol that shoots lesser ammo than a 9mm at 50% more. .22lr is a better option
"Shoots lesser ammo than a 9mm at 50% more..."
If that's your primary criteria for weapons acquisitions, you'll probably never buy anything but another 9mm semi-auto (although you MAY get lucky and find a revolver in 9mm...) That probably means no shotguns, no deer rifles, no ARs, and certainly no .45s or .40s, and no .357 SIGs.
Better option for what? Rats, squirrels, small varmints?
That said, nobody's advocating a PMR-30 for home defense or carry (although with the right holster, it's light enough for camping trips), and 30 rounds gives you a lot of options. One of the new Kel-Tec CP-33 holds even more.
My wife wanted a gun for home defense (when I wasn't home) and we got a PMR-30 for her, after finding that she just couldn't rack the slides on any of my semi-autos with any confidence. And 30 rounds of .22 magnum might discourage someone, even if she missed -- as that round is LOUD!! (We keep electronic muffs in the bedrooms near the guns.)
Some of the .22 WMR ammo (Hornady Critical Defense-type ammo) which is designed for shorter barrels than typical .22 magnum rounds (which are designed for rifles), performs about the same as some of the better .380 ammo in ballistic gel tests. It's a bit more potent than some folks realize.
Happily or unhappily (I vary from one to the other), my wife has since lost interest -- I'm almost never away overnight, and now the PMR-30 is mostly my play toy. I shoot the PMR-30 more than some of my 9mms and .45s.
