What is the going price charged for a turkey shoot? The club that I belong to is going to hold one, but it has been years since any of us have shot one and I am trying to figure out what a decent price is.

I haven’t been to a turkey shoot in a long time but it was about $3 a shot. You could never beat the guys that had their barrels worked on and there were no kind of restrictions. The final straw was when somebody aimed their .22 rifle back toward town in the air and fired a shot. I left immediately and haven’t been to one since.

Thanks for the info. $3 seems to be the going rate. I just got a hold of Masey's and Saunders both here in NC and they were both $3. So that seems to be to going price.

10 shooters a run =10 shells $2.50 (figure .25 per shell X 10) and the turkey I checked at Sams right around .99 lb so lets just round up to 15.00 or certificate cost + the wanted profit total cost would be $17.25 if you do $2.50 per shooter that would be $7.50 profit per string $3.00 per would be $12.50 and you could run a short sting of 8 shooters and still make $7.50 keep it reasonable and people will shoot more I would do a $15.00 certificate toward the purchase of a turkey (work it out with a grocery store) so you don't have to Buy the turkeys and store them also look at ham shoots (more expensive) but Just work out the cost with the grocery store

My stepdads dad was heavy into turkey shoots. He hand machined chokes and sold them, made plenty of money doing it. Not nearly as much as he made on side bets during matches, he won a boat off a guy once. Old timers around here are serious about it. I can think of at least 3 weekly ones within 15 minutes of my house.

Our boat club holds one every year and we generated 55k in profit which all went to local charities. It is one the biggest ones in the Charleston area. We charge $5 for turkey, and $10 for 50/50, 10 shooters each round. On a normal night, we do 10 to 15 rounds of turkey, maybe 3 or 4 50/50 rounds. A busy night, it can be over 30 rounds. We have it down to a science with getting rounds of people in and out. We run ours Wednesday through Saturday starting in November, then Monday through Wednesday the week of Thanksgiving.

WTH is a turkey shoot?
You and either 9 or 11 other folks shoot at a standard target one time each (10 or 12 separate targets) and the closest hole to the bull or the biggest hole over the bull wins a frozen turkey or ham or half of the monies in the pot. My pops gave me his old double that does really well in the hunting gun shoots and I have an 835 custom barrel that does ok in the rifle sights shoot.

Would love to take my son...he's never been to one! I haven't been in 10 years probably!

If anyone is in the northern Davidson county area. Gumtree fire department on Gumtree Rd. runs one on Saturday evenings. They are starting on Nov. 9. They are very safety conscious, no drinking allowed, they have rules in place to try to keep it fair (I don't remember if wins are limited to the person or gun per night). They have a house gun that anyone can shoot, and it wins alot. Not sure on the prices haven't been in several years.

Depending on where you go it can be fun. Some places have restrictions on what chokes can be used and others have no restrictions.

Watch out for the restrictions where they check your barrel on the way in but the good old boys don’t get checked. Some of these guy run back bored barrels with drop in chokes on a bull barrel.

Cheating? You don't say! Well this is the birthplace of NASCAR, and after all it's only cheating if you get caught, right?

I haven't been to a turkey shoot in years... y'all got me wanting to go again. lol

When I use to go there were turkey, ham, and bacon rounds. Prices varied based on the prize... the higher costing prize had a higher entry fee.

There is a good one over at Silk Hope fire dept and a couple on the Sanford side of Pittsboro. I have not been in a couple of years, I went to a shoot a and I bought 6 rounds, won 5 straight and pulled the 6th so I would not get murdered in the parking lot. I went back two more times with the same gun and bought $40 worth of rounds each time and did not win anything. I need to go back, I love the fire barrel talk and the gunpowder smell.

You're not from around here... Are ya' ?

I've always thought a Vang Comp modified gun would work well in a turkey shoot. Lengthened forcing cone and back bored. Someone I knew that shot them said it's basically a very large caliber pre-fragmented rifle.

I've lived here a while, but originally from Texas.

Linwood Lions starting 25 october, off I85 @ lexington airport/ high rock lake exit, south about 1 mile

90 ft
stock guns,
32" barrel length and can't remember choke bore limit... they have a gauge to insert in muzzle.
IIRC, 3 dollar/ round
have turkey rounds, ham round, maybe a money round.
some decent hotdogs also....

A local volunteer fire department used to hold them fairly regularly several decades ago. The prize went to the pellet closest to the center of the bulls eye. The shoot provided the ammo so nobody could cook up a special load. Anybody could fire any shotgun at the shoot so that someone with a real whizbang tight choke had no advantage.

inserting a gauge in a back bored gun would not tell them anything as the amount of choke is the constriction from the bore size not the diameter of the choke IE a xtra full is .040 with a normal 12 ga bore of .729 that would make it .689 now on my backbored gun .735 bore 12 ga the same xtra full chole would measure .695 or some where between the normal choke size of a IM and a full choke tube

the way around others wining with your gun is like my trap gun it shoot a good 5-6 inches high with the densest part of the pattern. below that is spotty

jus reportin what they do, how you want to cheat is up to you
they also supply the ammo....

oh, and i understand the concept of backboring.

I would love to find a good one in my area. I did one 12 years ago in Ocoee, FL right before I moved up here. While I’ve never looked too hard for one in the Charlotte area, I’ve also not had one jump out at me.

The one I did in FL was great for camaraderie and addictive as hell. You could easily get caught in the “just one more” loop. I think the Lions Club put it on.

Maybe we need a CFF turkey shoot???

As to cheating...in the late 80s there were 3 fellows that showed up at Anthill in Southport. These goomers had a station wagon with about a dozen shotguns in the back. They were "Money Shooters" and went on a regular trip in the fall to shoot turkey shoots. None of us were familiar with the money shoot concept but apparently in those days it was big doins up north.
All their guns had 60 inch barrels, they had no concern for choke selection. Their idea was to have the shot charge exit the barrel at no more than 4-500 FPS. The drag of the long tubes slowed the shot charge That much.
NOW these guns were So effective they expected to replace the target poles every 4th relay! They would shoot them in 2.
The matches they went to determined the winner by counting how many pellets were Outside the black center!
Our Ole Pard John Green after seeing this, built one of these guns. They were amazing and made very little muzzle report, just....Poooooof.

A pipe fitter foreman and his wife on the last job I worked were into turkey shoots.
They had several special built guns and won a lot.
He said she out-shot him on a regular basis.

Here's their target... have it attached as a pdf so print at will

remember 90ft and pellet closest to center....

here a non-winning target, (used to have a few winner and non-winner targets scanned just to demonstrate the pure luck @ 90ft....
but lost with a computer failure....
not sure if the pellet hits show well.... this was with a 1903 winchester 1897 30" full choke gun.

I was told the highly modified guns they had to measure how much of the paper was left in the bulls-eye to see who won.

I've not been to a 'Turkey' shoot. Been to many 50/50 shoots.

A 50/50 is where you pay $5 and shoot three shots at a deer target. It's colored and has outlines of the vitals (values increase, spine +2, heart +3, etc) that you can't see from 50yds. Any rifle/shotgun, grouped by iron or optics.

The best shot for each point value splits the pot with the club. With up to 8 shooters you could win $20. No one wanted to be on the line someone who was winning a lot of $ and it would be a strategy game as to when you wanted to shoot.

The church I go to has a shoot the three weekends leading up to Thanksgiving. Shooters choice turkey or sausage while supply lasts.
The cost is $5 a shot or 5 shots for $20 and there has never been a lack of shooters. Run what ya brung.
IIRC we have done right at 30 boards in a night, 10 shooters per board.
