Talk me out of building a kit car... Daytona Coupe

I re-read your post today when beer wasn’t involved. I stand (sit, actually) corrected.
Lol, beer has made many a poor thought become an absolute. Next time I'll pop a top to keep the conversation somewhat level, well on second thought maybe not so level.

I won’t track it. What us geezers do with these is a) stare at it in the garage, b) crank it up, and listen to it while staring it in the garage, c) drive it out in the sticks fast enough to scare myself a few times, d) sell it.

I rarely keep “fun cars” a year. The last two just 9 months. I’ve driven 911’s. Great cars, but like Harley’s, I’m more interested in the sound of wind and internal combustion at 55MPH on the back roads. As for four wheeled vehicles the sound of six cylinders just doesn’t do it for me like old school 8, although a good friend in school had a 914-6 with stingers and it sounded pretty badass. He wrecked it and sold it to Martini Racing

I’m cramped in a 911, and the Gen III Type 65 Coupe from FFR is purportedly much roomier than their previous iterations.

Sounds about right.

Well, Im geezer myself and would love to torture myself with one.

Gen I FFR Type 65 Coupe built by Levy racing bid to $52,000 this afternoon. No sale, apparently.

The sound....

If this doesn’t give you wood...
we can’t be friends.

At first glance I'm looking for a prancing horse badge, wrong color for me.
You know what they say, if you’ve nothing nice to say,
yer in the wrong thread.

Sometimes you need someone to tell you the underwear goes on first, so to speak. Paint the car the original factory color and people won't be scratching their head trying to guess if it's a 250GT or another Enzo model.

Daytona Coupe aficionados recognize the difference between a 250 GTO and a Brock designed masterpiece.

Apparantly the aficionados also saw very little value in the pictured coupe. I'm betting a original paint scheme would have raised the bids considerably.

It's Friday, now I understand.

Were the 2 into 1 headers a daytona coupe thing? Certainly a unique sound, but I haven't seen them anywhere else.

I’ve not seen them elsewhere either.

@fieldgrade -- I saw a continuation Shelby Datytona Coupe at Olthoff's garage >>> must say it was pretty sweet.

Since an original Daytona is unobtanium, I've always thought the Kirkham Coupe represents a whole lot of badassery --

Yep, the Kirkhams with their alloy bodies like the originals really are something else. Don't they make the bodies for Shelby’s continuation series Cobras?

Yep, I believe Kirkham did make (at least) some of the aluminum bodies for Shelby's continuation cars (though, not sure of current arrangement).

$209,000?
For that much I could have 2 Daytona Coupes and a garage to put them in.
The Superformance and Kirkham Daytonas would probably be in the same league pricewise as that Boss.

And it’s all out of my league.

How ever much you think this is going to end up costing to finish just go ahead and triple that number and you might be in the ball park.

I'm in the middle of building the FFR Roadster MkIII (Shelby Cobra kit). Just finished up the engine and once I get it running and driving the body will be sent off to get painted. They're a blast to drive and a blast to build, but it can cost a fortune depending on what you want to do with it and what you're willing to put into it. I've seen people build on a budget and cost them less than 30k all in. I've also seen people build a ridiculous monstrosity and spend over 100k doing the same kit. I figure all in I'll be at around 45-50k when it's finished.

My next one I'm debating between the Daytona Coupe or the GTM...

You should start a thread and post pictures of your build, lots of us here would like to see it.

Please do.
By all means!

I'll have it up in a few days. I don't have a dedicated album so I'll have to sort through everything.

I've done a lot of stuff not included in the kit and manual, I'll see if I have anything showing those, too. Like an extended foot box for the driver, a heater, a storage compartment in the rear wall in between the seats that also houses two speakers, battery in the trunk, etc. After a while it kind of grows a mind of its own. It's easy to get sidetracked on little projects changing things and redoing things as you go.

How long have you been working on it?

How long have you been working on it?

On and off for about 6 years now? If I could work on it solid without things getting in the way like work, kids, the wife, you know all those pesky things, I could have probably gotten it done in a couple of months. But we've moved 3 times, worked nights for a long time, changed jobs where I'm driving 40 miles each way, and added little ones to the mix. So that stretched out the timeline BIG time. I also got a '93 5.0 Mustang I was using as a donor and found out it was driven into a lake and blew water out the side of the engine block. So had to start from scratch on the motor and a few other parts.

I had a 92 LX 5.0 5 speed with 58k about five years ago. If it was a notch I would have kept it.

I was always partial to the hatches, but was never a foxbody guy myself.

For the FFR Cobra kit, the 1989-1993 5.0 LX has 90% of the running gear you need, so most guys pick one up and use it as a donor. Really depends on what direction you go in. I've got a full coilover setup in place of the Mustang suspension. I've also got bigger brakes and a few other odds and ends I wanted instead. But I did go with the 5.0l 302, worked up of course, probably around a 321 now if my numbers are right. Should be right around 450 to the wheels. Only thing you really need to do is cut the driveshaft down to make it shorter, since this is a significantly shorter wheelbase than the Mustang was.

Good news, I've got a bunch of photos together, I'll be working on the post and should have it up tomorrow.
