I'm really bad for not going to the doctor but I've gained more than a few pounds in the last 1.5 years since my new position doesn't require really any physical activity.

Was having a weird pain in my left leg and my fiancee was nagging me to go so we went to the doctor yesterday.

As the nurse was taking my vitals and asking all kinds of questions about my health, one question she asked surprised me. She asked if we had any firearms in the house? Me and my fiancee looked at each other stunned and I just replied, I prefer not to answer that. Is this a normal question doctor offices are asking now? Trying to figure out why it's any of their business.

The PA was very friendly, after my exam(no I'm not dying lol) he stepped out for a few minutes and came back in and asked if we would like to pray about anything before we left, we both thought that was nice.

Now i just gotta start eating healthier and exercising.

I haven't been asked that yet, but I understand it's becoming more common.

Kudos on your response to it, though.

Just look at the one asking the questions and ask them if they like (something not appropriate to be viewed here) and when they say that question in not appropriate or none of your business tell them "Well you started it".

side note: I don't get asked that at my regular doctor cause the nurse is the one asking the questions and I grew up with her. Pretty sure she already knows the answer.

I went to my doc in June because I was having trouble shaking a cough after a cold. It's a smaller practice with an MD and two PA's. The attractive, younger PA asked me to raise my shirt so she could listen to my lungs. I told her there was a gun under there, she said OK, and afterwards thanked me for letting her know. Nothing further said, no reaction. The way it should be.

You have options. Simply declining to answer, like you did, is one. You have more options, depending on how far you want to take it.
Doctors For Responsible Gun Ownership published an info guide a couple of years ago with some of those options.

Yes, the answer is NO

or maybe the answer can be: not as many as I would like to have :)

I would be more alarmed at a doctor who asked me if I wanted to pray that I would be at a doctor who asked me if I have any firearms in the house. My shocked face would be the same if the doctor asked me if I wanted to sacrifice a chicken, throw the bones, read the tarot cards, or have a seance.

Said it for me.

My Doc. doesn't ask about guns either.

It is on my check-in form. I always check "no". By the time I would be in any trouble for lying about it(if ever), I'd be in much deeper trouble for something else.

No law against lying to your doctor that I know of.

It's on the standard visit screening forms. I decline to answer, and then my son's pediatrician asked, I replied "that's none of XXXX Hospital's business" and he never asked again.

My dr just tells me to be sure and wear ear pro when I shoot. He’s not a shooter that I know of. He also doesn’t care either way.

That's why when asked a question on guns or hunting,my answer is always " don't know bout guns but fish still like worms".........

I was in the ER having a heart attack about 12 years ago and when the ER Dr. walked in the first thing he asked me is he could say a word of prayer. It must have caused a strange expression on my face because he said he was not giving me my last rights, but he was a religious man and liked to ask the Lord to come in and give him help and guidance when treating patients. I told he to feel free and bring in all the help he felt like he needed. It was very short and I certainly was not offended one bit.

An Urgent Care PA was asking my daughter questions that were just... prying... Typical Yankee Educated down in the South type Woman that was going to be drink the kool-aid.

She said, "Do you have any guns in your house?".....

Lauren said, "Yes, I have 5 but the rest are my Mom and Dad's."

The PA said, "Five?... Doesn't that seem dangerous?"

Lauren quipped..."Only danger is to what I am hunting that day.".....

I laughed my ass off... and asked the Yankee PA if she had any more personal questions, because she would be glad to answer them.

Where do you guys live???? In my life I have had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, gall bladder surgery, achilles tendon surgery, numerous cat scans and MRI's and even a nuclear stress test and I have never once been asked or seen that question on a form I had to fill out. You guys need better doctors.

When I was sent to a specialist that I never saw before, I had to fill out the standard new patient questionnaire. One
question asked was if there were any guns in the house. My answer was N/A. They never said anything after that.

Folks, I'm not trying to criticize anyone but the best answer had already been suggested.

Just say "no". Don't admit to anything. You aren't under oath and they have no legal right to know the truth.

In this case, being coy will be interpreted as a "yes" answer.

Just say "no".

I've been asked once. Doc walked in looking at his clipboard and after "Hey how are you?" started asking all sorts of stuff. Then out of the blue he asked "So any firearms in the house where you live?" I told him "You tell me" and he finally looked up and saw my badge and sidearm.

PS>>>I never went back to his office.

A doctor I use to see years ago, on our first visit, him making small talk, went something like this.

Him- Doing anything fun this weekend?
Me- Going camping in Black Mountain.
Me- How about you Doc?
Him- Oh yeah, shooting in a match at PHA this weekend.
Me- Well good luck Doc.

He never asked if I had any, and I've never had it questioned on a form.

It's on the forms they want me to update every year, I just ignore it. I know that my docs wife has her CHP, so I know he didn't initiate the question on the form. Never been asked verbally.

I don't think I've ever been asked that by a VA Dr. Had the pleasure of using the urgent care at the Fayetteville VA today and all they asked was if I had any weapons on me at that time.

If they gotta stick a needle in your arse and you scream "I SHALL NOT COMPLY!" - they mark it for you.

My trick is.... Don't go to the doctors..
Couple cans of white claw cures your ails.

I recently had a bout of lung cancer (2nd time) and I normally leave my weapon in the truck because I am shirtless for the radiation treatments. After 6 weeks of every day treatments I was only carrying a pocket gun and I forgot to leave it one day, the radiation techs couldn't have cared less!

My last physical; took off my shirt ...

Physician: "What's that?"
Me: A holster.
Physician: ::blank look::
Me: ::blank look::
Physician: "So, where's this mole you wanted me to examine?"

My favorite anecdote, though, was when the nurse asked:

Nurse: "Are you on any sort of diet?"
Me: "Er, no, unless you mean 'meat-and-potatoes.' "

Doctors are more dangerous than guns. Next time a Dr asks that question tell them you aren't worried about your guns, your worried about him! Then give him the death stats for guns vs medical errors.
