What round would you choose for out to 2000yds? 300win, 300prc, 338 lapua? Needs to have factory ammo available. Needs to have factory rifle available.

I'm leaning to the 300prc. Has really nice ballistics and the factory match ammos not crazy expensive. Looking at the ruger precision rifle. Thoughts?

good discussion

After ciphering and pondering I'd probably go with the 300prc or a 300 norma mag. I've got two 338's and they like expensive meals. I might have to slap a 300prc chambered barrel on one and see what happens. Have to check on dies and brass availability first.

Oops, better check barrel life specs. Appears that on the average you will get about 30-40% less barrel life with the 300prc if I did my math correctly. With the cost of barrel and installation being around 600+ the brass cost of the 338 may be offset.

My AR30 in 338 is a master blaster, fun to shoot and accurate.

Well I have decided to go with the 338LM. I will be reloading for it. It will be next year before I buy the rifle. I pretty sure i will be getting a savage 110 elite precision. It comes with a 30 inch barrel in the 338LM. Should be awesome!

I've got a 338LM. It's a blast but at $4+/round for factory ammo I don't know if I could afford to feed it if I didn't reload.

Reloading gets me down to about $1.53/round assuming I'll get 10 loadings on Lapua brass. I'm up to seven on one lot with no problems.

With that cost of ammo, I wouldn't rule out a cartridge that had a reputation of needing a new barrel every 3-5 thousand rounds.

Either way, trying for distance is extremely humbling.

Midway had (Has?) a good deal on Lapua 338 LM brass. Less than a $1.00 apiece. If your serious about getting one you may as well start stocking up on components. I have a Savage 12 target model (single shot) and it is a lot of fun to shoot and a box of ammo will go a long way one round at a time. The pricey part of handloading these are the bullets. But think about how metal you are sending down range. I really like the .300 grain Berger OTM's. I buy them in bulk, again, when I find a sale going on.

I’ve got some once fired 338 Lapua brass I’ve picked up (not nasty month old range crap). It’s not much but it might be enough to keep you from using “good” stuff for load testing, setting up dies etc

I've run Lapua, PPU and Midway's brass. Honestly the quality of the last 200 of new Lapua brass I got sucked. I ended up doing almost as much prep work on it as I have done with the other. I saw no change in group size or velocity with either the PPU or the Midway. Some of the PPU flash holes were off center but did not affect anything. No matter what brass you get you need to FL size it and it helps to have bushing dies to get your neck tension to where you want it. I run 4 thousandths tension. If you are really going for ELR everything has got to be spot on. I do full prep on all brass including straightening the necks with a mandrel, FL sizing, flash hole debur and primer pocket uniforming. you're going to need a good method for determining your OAL Giraud makes a great headspace and ogive attachment for your mic.

Bullets are a toss up. I run Sierra 300's but Barnes has some new stuff out there, damned expensive.

Get a good muzzle brake and a good stock.

I wish I could find a good place within decent driving distance to stretch a couple out.
