I did not want to hijack the thread about a 1917 and decided to start a new thread with my question. How do you adjust the sights for windage? Is it necessary to drift the front sight in order to do that?

Use a punch on the front sight.
Here is more info on the 1917:

Yes, you'll need to drift the front sight to zero the rifle. However, holding off (aka - kentucky windage) was common practice with the 1917 rifle. An excerpt from volume 64 of the American Rifleman:

Holding off with the battle sight at 200 yards with the Model 1917 works quite satisfactorily. In slow fire what small allowance is made for wind is accomplished without a great deal of trouble. In rapid fire on the silhouette target there is but little time for windage calculations hence very little attention is paid to it.
