Good -bye 11foot8 Bridge

The infamous "can opener" bridge in Durham is being lifted...a little bit...

Bumping it up to 12' 4". Still not standard height of 13'6". This looks like a political "fix." Make it look like we did something fix.

That bridge is a pain in the back side. Im not familiar with Durham and always have to find a way around, but there is no mistaking the height when you get to it.

12'4" is still gonna get the idiots (and rental truck drivers.
Still plenty of video footage to be had.
11'8" to 12'4" is a waste of $$

You would think the only shocking part is why it took so long, but I don't get why it isn't going to 13'6.

Because there is another whole level of stupid out there they need to teach a life lesson to.

There's a major sewer line and power running underneath the street, so they cannot lower the street. And as @Ferrisfan said, raising the bridge would require raising track for blocks, requiring a rework of every crossing intersection. This gives them the height to reduce most of the accidents for probably 5% of the cost of 13'6".

Ha! I never realized this was in durham haha. I’ve watched this on YouTube a handful of times.

It doesn't look like they're actually raising the bridge, just taking off some the crap to protect the bridge from trucks....which lowered it from 12"4" to 11'8".

If this is the case sounds like they are going to be using it to fund the raising Project from some sucker that hits it and damages it.

You would get blood from a rock easier than you would that kind of settlement from some schmuck that crashes his truck. Just shooting from the hip, knowing the three key pieces I know about it (tracks too low, road too high, and major utilities underneath), you could easily be looking at a $50M+ project.

Just need a sapper to take it out
