According to my dad, who graduated from Clemson A&M in 1964, Clemson Stadium has been called Death Valley for years. Around 1962 a couple guys took a trip to Death Valley California and brought back a rock which they gave to coach Howard.

No matter what the history says, according to the old man, Howard used it as a doorstop for a year or two. He then pointed to it one day and told an employee “Go throw that damn thing in a ditch somewhere.” Instead the employee held onto it and then had it mounted at the stadium in 65.

The players started ritually rubbing it on the way into the stadium around 66 and it has become a rich tradition.

“If they ain’t gonna give 110% they can keep their filthy hands off my rock”.

A few months ago my son said his his Disney would be to go to a game at Death Valley with his pop pop. So that’s where we are today.

Funniest moment of the day. My dad was leading the way to the stadium. Two very attractive and barely dressed coeds walked by going in the opposite direction. As they pass my dad turns to my mom and says “Hmm. Maybe the stadium is that direction.” Pointing the way the girls were headed.

My mom didn’t catch it was a joke and, assuming the old man was senile turns to me and asks me to pull directions up on my phone. My dad rolls his eyes at me with a grin and keeps walking. LMAO. I had to tell my mom he was joking.
