For some reason I can’t get in my safe. I know my combination. It’s a Field & Stream dial type. It won’t unlock. Any ideas? Any good locksmiths around Lexington?

Try using the combination one digit less, then one digit higher, see if that works.
Does the dial feel any different then last time, I had a key sheer off in my S&G lock when I was a bank teller years ago.

Make sure you are getting the spins between numbers right. I nearly had the same problem with mine a while back. Just counting my spins wrong was keeping it from unlocking.

I have tried one, two and three digits less/higher with no luck. The dial does feel a little tighter than normal. I plan to call the manufacturer today to see if they have any suggestions before calling a locksmith.

I would hate to have that happen... just thinking about it is scary!

I need to make sure my family have the combination, just in case I get senile like @Jeppo.
Jeppo’s not senile.

He still remembers the combination to your safe. :D

Hey wait a minute! I thought these type of safes didn't fail? This is the second one I know if that has been a problem.

Went to a party a a guys house and the safe was in the garage. Damn nicest garage I ever saw. He had his combination on a piece of paper on the front of the safe. When I asked him if that didn't kinda defeat the purpose of the safe he said "No, it's a game. Anyone who can open the safe gets $20." Everyone tried and one guy finally got it to open. Come to find out the dude couldn't get it to open himself so this was a last ditch effort before the locksmith.

So there ya go Huckleberry. Have a party. Invite us all over and whoever can open the safe get $50. Yeah I know it was $20 in my story but it was a while ago. ;)

Might also try holding the door in a bit as you dial in case something inside has shifted and is putting pressure on the bolt mechanism.
Yes, this can be it.
I had the same problem when I couldn’t open the safe; I wrapped a ratchet strap around the safe with couple of 2x4 pieces around the door...tightened the straps couple of clicks and was able to unlock it.

Very ingneious method, 12151791!

BTW, is that your combination?

Looks like the date the BOR was ratified...

I have tried everything that I can think of before posting on here, including this.

Haha. You paying?

How 'bout, whomever opens it can select one item from within?

“One item” could be interrupted many ways. Firearms, jewelry, deeds to properties, titles, etc??? One could walk away a very lucky person. Haha

I had the opposite problem, mine would open but not close, electronic lock. I called Canon, they sent a new keypad and Rotobolt. Replaced the Rotobolt, safe locked.
Good service from Canon.

Mechanical lock failure, that’s as rare as a Glock failure according to internet lore.

Maybe that’s why it broke. Someone wanted me to keep a glock for them while they went on vacation :eek:o_O. I hope it didn’t rub off on my Springfields.

The locksmith our bank said to keep your thumb on the dial when turning, helps to keep track of the counts.

You can easily change the combination with the key, easy to buy on eBay. Put 2x4 to keep door propped open after changing, test new combination several times before closing the door.

Try "sliding" the combination ONE digit in the direction of travel on the dial for each number. My safe as worn a bit so the combination has "slid" one digit off in the direction of travel. Once you get in, you can likely reset the combination or just remember that it has slid some!

try pushing the handle to the left or right before you use the combo I have one that will not open if the handle is pushed left. You have to push it to the right release it and then work the combo

If the dial lock has a keyed cylinder, try locking the dial and unlocking it a few times.

Be sure to try this part from what @Catfish linked to:

The second technique involves vibrating the lock after the code has been dialed into the lock:1.Dial the correct combination numbers, after you have dialed to the third number of the combination, turn the dial to the right (clockwise) to 0. 2.Rattle the opening handle vigorously left and right several times to cause vibration 3.Using the palm of your hand you may add more vibration by striking the face of the dial, do not hit to hard or hurt yourself. 4.Continue to turn the dial to the right, it should stop at approximately87 if the procedure worked and the handle will turn to open.
