Deer season 2019

Got a 4 pointer yesterday evening with a 14.5 556 shooting federal fusion 62 grainers. 5A014BA2-1D23-4E4C-8363-A0BA2D6F966F.jpeg
Afterward I was skinning it and had a little accident but got it sewn up soon after. Be careful guys it only takes one little slip.

I hope you were on your property very near to home and disentangle have to walk far out of the woods.

I hunt public land, walking in 1+ mile or so and if this happened to me things could go wrong real quick.

Hoping for your quick recovery, what did the doctor say, a full recovery with no lasting damage?

You should add a tourniquet to your hunting equipment, just in case... Even if you didn't want to cut off circulation to your whole hand, you could put it directly on the injury and use it as a pressure dressing.

It's always good to have a TQ on you...

+1. My medical kit also always has QuikClot, Liquid bandage and these derma patch things that NYC EMT use to slap on bleeding wounds like gunshots (they will stick to just about anything, including blood covered skin). First aid is definitely important gear to come along on any hunt.

You guys are pretty funny. I hesitated to post pictures but figured i could endure a little ribbing while in exchange telling folks to be careful.

I had it hanging on the front end loader like every other time and just slipped. Lucky I was right next to the house and didn’t have to walk very far.
I didn’t have a first aid kit near by so I just wrapped it with a rag and a towel before heading to the dr. My wife did bring a tourniquet from the house but I had to many clothes on and the way my coat was half on and wrapped around the wound I figured it would be more trouble that it was worth. Looking back I think I could have used it but wasn’t thinking very good at the time. It was about a 45 minute drive to the er and by then my good arm/hand was pretty tired of holding pressure. Going to see a specialist in the am to make sure all is well.

Just happened to be the trusty old leatherman wave+.

Good that you had you wife drive you, if you were alone the TQ would keep you alive if you tripped or got a little shocky and could not keep the wound under pressure.

Christ man. You need to get stainless fillet gloves to clean deer next year

I have used a glove for years. I keep my knives very sharp. Never cut myself that bad but just got tired of all the little ones.

Guess you guys are having about the same success that I have. No posts in over a week.

I’ve been after the same buck for 6 weeks now and he continues to duck me. I’m starting to think he may be hunting me instead of the other way around.

Finally got up in a stand this afternoon. About 10 minutes later, so here come the dogs. I don't dog hunt, Dad does not allow that but both sides of the family farm are leased for dog hunting.
Same thing every time I get out for two years now. Don't matter where on the farm I go, the #%$&+##@$%& dogs show up.
I'll try again tomorrow.

I think I've been one time since my last post. Only saw a button head.

I was hoping to go this morning, but 8.0% double IPAs and a whole freaking can of peanuts before bed guaranteed I would spend my morning on the toilet, instead of in the blind. It's the reason I changed my title.

I hope to go in the morning.

Me too but I’m deep in the Voodoo Rangers so we’ll see how that turns out.

I haven’t seen a deer since opening day of rifle season. Everything that I had saw until then was either a button head or yearling doe. I’m planning on going tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday. This late in the season with no meat in the fridge I’ll be following if it’s brown it’s down.

Saw lots of babies and the resident doe, both morning and afternoon hunts.

I saw one doe that I considered taking, but she wasn't where I wanted her to be and when she decided to move, it was completely out of the area.

40 minutes after getting getting into the stand, I was settling into a pseudo nap, derned squirrels rattling about, crap... that’s a buck.

*edit* A 125g Hornady Amax 300BLK in a 10” SBR hammered him in front of the game camera, AND IT DIDN'T GET IT
I was hoping it caught his back flip with a twist and spraying a 3’ blood trail for 30 yards then piled up.
I now have a lot more confidence in the BLK.

I’ve basically given up for the season. First season in a long time I won’t get a deer or 3. But I’m not home to eat them anyway. Might go Tuesday but I doubt it. And honestly, I’ve been so busy I’m not even that interested in it this year.

I shot a buck a few weeks ago with my 300blk ar pistol with 10.5 inch barrel. Shot was 40 or 50 yards. I hit him right behind the front shoulder. He jumped straight up and then ran about 20 yards before he wobbled and collapsed.

When I got to the body, I quickly realized that there was no exit wound. I expected there to be an exit wound, but there wasn't one...

Eventually, I went to my ammo stash and read the box... I had accidentally shot him with a sub sonic round... I guess that's why it didn't have enough oomph to pass through the chest cavity...

Either way, it made me happy to think that if I ever use my 300blk pistol for home defense, maybe I won't have to worry about over penetration...

This is the 1st harvest with the HD rifle and seeing the 3’ spray out the exit wound as he imitated Simone Biles gives me confidence in this setup.

BTW that blade was great for dressing him out, I bought it and got to use it on the same day :)

Thanks! It’s the 2nd AR I built, almost 10 years later it’s a favorite. Geissele SSA-E, Hogan ambi billet lower, WMD NiB BCG, MF stock, 10” McGowen SS hand lapped 1-7 barrel, Syrac adj gas block, Seekins rail, Ranier ch, TBAC can and an Aimpoint T2 that works great with the PVS-14.

Beautiful 6!
yes he is and he bout killed my old arse dragging him up the hill from the creek but I'd do it a thousand times over. I thanked him and the Big guy for letting me take him today. I've always felt beholding to an animal when it gives its life for me to take its body to use. I know may sound goofy to some. I was raised to respect any animal I hunt to eat, and to give them their due respects when I've taken them. I wondered at first if I was going to be able to get him he was really cautious to a point. I watched him for close to 20 minutes as he had came up from the creek and he stood probably 10 yards from me and watched, smelled and listened and then figured he best walk around and check it out better from another angle. He turned went back down to the creek and went up about 40 yards and came up again about 60 yards in front of me coming up the other side of the ridge I've got our blind on. He came straight in on me to about 30 yards then went uphill to check out around the place. He then after bout 15 minutes came back down feeling it was ok and started to eat the corn probably 12 yards in front of me. I waitied bout 5 minutes and he got in a good position for me to shoot and I did end of what I considered and awesome evening, well not end long from it as I had to track and find him then drag him back up the hill from the creek back to the house but its all done now and once again I give thanks to the big boy and the boss man

Yep. I agree. It's always important to be thankful.

A few weeks ago, I killed that little buck. I took my daughters, 5yo and 7yo, to show them how to track it. When we found the body, I made sure it was dead and I called them over. They petted it, and then we prayed over it and thanked God for this gift of food.

They are good girls and I thank God for them every day.

My son who is 12 got his first one this afternoon. First one he has shot at he watched one last week for 10-15 minutes and wouldn't shoot. Today he said it was on if one came in. Bout 4:16 I wasn't even looking hard yet he said there is one in the corn. Got the rifle up asked if I was ready, and dropped the hammer. Hit him in the neck dropped in his tracks. He was using the same gun I used to kill my first couple of deer 30+ years ago. We got down and went to get it, I asked him why the neck shot after we had talked about shooting lungs, he said that's where I was aiming, I must have flinched. Well it was a good flinch, it all worked out. Nice button head and he didn't mess up any meat. He is ready for Wednesday afternoon now.

Button heads. Gah. I've got four of those rascals showing up at a time. I want their moms and aunts. WTH?
