I was visiting an old friend of mine Yesterday and he brought up something I had been thinking about some time. I was graduated from high school in 1965. He ,from the same school, in 1945. He said," What do you make of all this talk of Trump having been impeached?" Knowing him like I do, I was certain of his meaning. I said, "Who has been impeached?"
The point being, there have been 2 Presidents brought up on charges and tried...Neither was Impeached. I am well aware that there are things that are referred to differently today than then, but Wow! I hear all day about the Impeachment by the House of President Trump. We were taught, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, That for a President to be impeached, he had to be Removed from office by trial.
So, what say you??? 3rd definition in Webster's says...to remove from public office for misconduct. First 2 refer to charging????
Just curious, the differences between 60 years of High School History.

I don’t consider it a requirement for them to be removed from office. I did early on based on what I knew about Nixon. But I guess I base my current understanding on the dealings with Clinton.

He has been impeached.

https://history.house.gov/Institution/Origins-Development/Impeachment/

“The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
— U.S. Constitution, Article II, section 4

The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the sole power to impeach an official, and it makes the Senate the sole court for impeachment trials. The power of impeachment is limited to removal from office but also provides for a removed officer to be disqualified from holding future office. Fines and potential jail time for crimes committed while in office are left to civil courts.

Once the House walked the articles of impeachment across the hall he was impeached. This does not mean he has been found guilty. Bill Clinton & Andrew Johnson were impeached. Nixon was not.

Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached by the House of Representatives and tried in the Senate. Both Presidents were acquitted by the Senate but still have the stigma of the only presidents that were impeached. So, impeachment is for life but acquittal is also for life.

I just see it as going to court for say murder. Then you go to trial and you are Acquitted or proven innocent. If you're not removed from society or from office in this case ,its just a trial. This happened to Clinton and he's no worse for it after the fact.

And he actually DID something (and looked like a fool trying to explain his lie)

Seems that today's interpretation is different than my old Pard and I were taught. This is one New Norm I can easily live with. Thanks Folks!!!!

It seems you only get away with things if you are a democrat. (ie clinton, clinton, northam, etc.)

If they do remove him from office, will this definitely bring on the party?

Trump will make history ... he’ll be the first POTUS to be impeached twice ... or more. Once this fuster cluck is done the Dims will huddle in a dark corner, regroup and start another Kangaroo Judical Committee ... Schifty and crew will go after again (maybe the Parnas-blower route). After that who knows how the 2020 House elections turn out they might go another time?

No, there have been, now, THREE presidents impeached - Johnson, Clinton, Trump.
First two not removed from office.
Too many think impeached means to be removed from office, this is false.
But, as pointed out, we HAVE had two (now three) that WERE impeached.

That is the Whole point of my post. We, my friend and I, were taught in school that only removal was To Be Impeached. I was asking about today's interpretation. As I said , I can go with either. It's just another example of generational differences.

They will not stop, Schiff and Nadler will return to the house with their tails between their legs,
start issuing more subpoenas for everything and everyone, tie up the courts and drag it on until November.
Russian asset, agent, traitor, dictator, king, etc etc.. they forget he is The President of the United States.

Schifty and Nads are doing more damage to the US and Rule Of Law than any of Trump’s shenanigans could ever do

Nixon gets an asterisk. Well he was not impeached, it was only because he resigned. Impeachment proceedings were ongoing, but he released the "smoking gun" tapes prior to the full vote. Once those tapes were released, almost all the Republicans in the house told him that impeachment was a certainty, along with a severe punishment by the Senate. So he resigned.

And that being said, I’d take Nixon over either Clinton any day.

Nixon wasnt even on my mind, he wasnt impeached.
BUT, again, we've had THREE PRESIDENTS IMPEACHED lol
Johnson
Clinton
Trump
They've been impeached

@BatteryOaksBilly sorry your teachers did a crap job at teaching you what something means.
But it's NEVER meant being removed from office...again, going back to the first one in the 1860s, not removed.
But I get it, too many just assume it means to be removed, those people are ignorant. I do my best to correct that every year/semester/whatever.

OR as in my case taught by Ignorant teachers. OR maybe it as other things has "evolved". Don't jump on the Ignorant key too fast your School Teacher brain might burst.
lol
ok
Any evidence that the meaning has changed, or, again, just taught poorly?

"Ignorance" , as Billy states, is not always a crime! Ignoring what you've learned to be true probsbly is.

To add, dont get too upset by my word ignorant.
Do you know what it means? It means uneducated...which, obviously many are. Blame teachers. Blame media. Blame parents.

And I agree, everyone is ignorant on various things

Up until Clinton I thought it meant "removed" as well. Clinton made a big deal about the meaning of words so I learned a useful thing or two... about cigars an other stuff.

My very favorite Clinton answer was " Welllll, it depends on what Your definition of "is" is.

Democrats have held a grudge and have been looking for payback since Clinton was impeached.

Schiff's career in Congress has been motivated by impeachment. The predecessor in Schiff's House seat was one of the Republican House managers for Clinton's impeachment. The DNC targeted the impeachment managers in the following election and Schiff was elected to Congress on the basis of squealing loudly that Clinton's impeachment was wrong, unfair, etc. And Schiff was first in line to stoke the fires when an opportunity arose to roast a Republican.

That's why I asterisk'd his name. It was a done deal, headed for the final vote in the house. His resignation beat the vote.

ignorance: "Lacking education or knowledge", "Unaware of uninformed" - a condition easily remedied if one is willing to do so. The problem is that so many are not willing to do so.

Willful ignorance = the pinnacle of stupidity.
