Here’s an email that just came out from Fernando (a vendor here)

One lady quoted in the article saying bullets whizzing by her lives in the opposite direction of the rifle range. And due to the layout, there’s no way pistol rounds are making it over the berm to travel that way:

House circled in blue, black arrow direction of rifle fire:

@Panteao please let us know what we can do to help

Are any hearings open for public comment?

I’m a member here and so is @JustKeepSwimming . I DO NOT want to lose this asset. There’s nothing like it remotely close to here. Just some crabby “not in my backyard” type folks lying to suit their agenda

So the pistol range points in her direction? If so then the direction of the rifle range will be a mute point.

She lives 1000 feet away from the pistol bay at a 45 degree angle from the direction of the bay orientation

what if they arent lying and rounds are getting over the berm?

There is shooting going on all over the place in that area.

Rifle rounds arent traveling their direction from Panteao. And people would literally have to climb the trees above the pistol berms to generate the scenario they described

Perhaps another neighbor sending rounds in her direction. Would be interesting to get date and time of these incidents
to see if range was cold at the time.

That’s actually happened once.

Linemen on the nearby powerline were swearing up and down guys on the 360 bay were shooting rounds past them. They were on the phone with their supervisor who was physically at Panteao talking to Josh at the desk and there were no shooters on the firing line. It was coming from another piece of property somewhere

But since it’s a rifle range, they get the blame

At my primary range the range master logs the shooter and what caliber he/she is shooting, and when, for this reason.

range I used to belong to mirrored there set up (long before me, probably before I was born even) as the town started to populate and communities built in direction of fire.

I think the already had some decent acreage other way and purchased a few more from commercial owners not using it. Not sure it ever WAS an issue, but they were being proactive about it

Good luck with it. From those pics if any rounds were to get out of the bays they would be mostly harmless and headed nearly straight up before falling. It does happen sometimes. And a tumbling round makes a very distinct noise.

Do they have the NRA come out and inspect the berms? We get an inspection any time we make serious changes to any of our ranges.

I thought it was the house at the top of the picture. Are these yankee transplants? No offense to the good kinda yankee we have here on this board.

There are a few complainers in the article; the one directly “above” the pistol bay is further than the first:

Rounds wouldn’t be flying past; they’d be dropping straight down like mortars. I think they just don’t like the noise.

Probably just doesn’t like the noise and That’s not enough to get it shut down.

It's why all the other "allegations" are being added. Something just might stick.

Say what you want but if they're shooting at steel the possibilities are there for an errant shard to enter their neighbor's property. Paper targets, not likely.

My club range, Mid Carolina Rifle Club, went through this too. That’s why we wrote and got this Range Protection Act 2000 passed:

Panteao took over from Sandlapper, and Sandlapper still exists (their members are allowed to shoot at Panteao still). No downtime in operation. It seems like they’d be protected by that unless an increase in membership counts as a “substantial change” in use

Caveat Emptor I say
That's why our County Councilman wanted to get our signs posted BEFORE construction started. He got them made and brought them to me to put wherever I wanted.
We will eventually have a problem...….noise only. Wait til they hear the @Geezer Going Away Volley!!!!

Well if it became a supressor range that wouldn't be an issue either.

Unfortunately its happening here in the Piedmont as well. Shutting down outdoor ranges seems to be a current trend. I understand the noise complaint. No everyone likes to hear it all day on the weekends for instance. I wish i knew a good solution. Shooting outdoors is much better than indoors imho. More land, better buffer materials, maybe we all need suppressors or something, the only real solution is probably huge tracts of land.

Would be a good idea to get that statement.

HPA and/or abolish the ATF

Hi All,

We appreciate the support. We have a hearing scheduled for February 20th at 9AM at the Lexington County Court with Judge McLeod. We can definitely use all the assistance we can get.

It’s unfortunate that we have neighbors starting this mess. We have been making improvements to the range facility continually since 2015, prior to even owning the property. Since purchasing it, the improvements have continued.

With regards to the neighbors, they have been complaining about the range facility since before we leased or purchased the property. Allegations have been made about bullets leaving the range since before we purchased the property. To me that would be a concern if I felt that it actually occurred from our range. The fact that a pristine bullet was suddenly found in a yard is suspect when in 10 years of range activity, this never occurred. As has been pointed out by people that actually live in this area, local residents shoot on their properties all around us. We have no control over that. With a stop sign down the street riddled with bullet holes, it is safe to say that a projectile could come from any of those private properties.

When it comes to the sound of shooting, the shooting could be from our range, it could be coming from the Buck & Boar Lodge across the street, or from any of the nearby parcels where other folks shoot. It does not mean the sound levels from a decibel level are the issue. Simply that people hear the shooting, just like you can hear your neighbor’s dog barking.

In the end, we are extremely proud of our range and what we are able to offer folks that use it.

I absolutely LOVE your range, am a member, and will continue to be one for as long as you, Tina and Josh will have me! What you have done, and continue to do, to that range is amazing and I am proud to be a member and support you in your efforts.

I am sorry this is happening and hope that you will be quickly and clearly vindicated and reimbursed for your time and troubles by the folks that brought this forward.

Please keep us posted Fernando @Panteao

That's what they do in Germany - suppressors

Our buffers are 900 yards deep. When we are attacked it will be Noise. We are ready.
sheesh. I was firing 22lr at steel targets in my yard. ~100 yards away, the neighbor kids were playing with their dog on their lawn and nobody cared.
I know it's only a matter of time before somebody decides to complain... but i'm enjoying it for now.

Do you know which building/court house it’s in? There’s the big newer building at 205 E Main...not sure if that’s Judge McLeods office or courtroom location

I work downtown so I can walk to either court building within a few minutes

Are there any updates on this?

I was out there a couple weeks ago and they had a range construction expert (NRA Affiliated I believe but not 100% sure) as well as an attorney. They were also shooting various caliber rifles (I got to be a part of that with a 5.56) up to a .50 cal and measuring the volume at the distance where the primary complainant lives

I also heard there was an order from the judge for mediation between the parties but I don’t know much else

We went through a bunchbof this a my range and spent a lot of time and effort trying to decrease the chances of a bullet leaving our property. There is almost a mile without houses or roads behind our rifle ranges, but some people hunt there on land we do not own. We did a lot of work on our berms and covered some of our steel target stands. We also set down a new bunch of guidelines concerning the use of the various ranges. Bullets occasionally still go over a berm, and 360 yards is not an impossible distance for a deflected bullet to travel.

We have put a lot of money into buying up surrounding land so noise is less likely to be a problem.

We wanted to make sure it was clear that we were making an effort to contain out bullets.

Good luck with your efforts.

File a counter suit for harassment, libel and to recoup legal fees. It doesn't cost you to file a counter suit if you are being sued.

That's the only way you will be safe in the future.

I've been on outdoor ranges that have overhead beams going from the firing line to the targets so minimize bullets leaving the range. With so much development moving hard up against existing ranges this may become a requirement in the future.

Give all the neighbors free memberships. And make sure to invite them to the annual cookout. You do have an annual cookout don't you?

A local HOA here is getting set to sue a neighbor who has a private range. The guy has been there for many years and was grandfathered to not have to abide by 900 ft. rule here in Meck. The neighborhood is new. Just noise complaining. So far. These are the same type of idiots that live near an airport and complain about the noise.

pretty sure they're gonna run into our range protection law here in NC where a range is grandfathered from this type of crap.

Don't feel bad, one of my 4 close neighbors used to complain about the noise. After I informed me of the NC law and the fact he has a next door neighbor who holds an FFL and is an LEO who told him basically to suck it.......haven't heard a word.
