Looking to purchase a revolver this year in 357 Magnum. I like Ruger products and I wondered if anyone could help me guide me away or towards the GP100 or SP101 models.

Thanks

for carry SP101

for range fun GP100

both are nice

LCR is probably better for carry. i replaced my sp101 with an LCR

What he said. If you have smaller hands you will like the SP101 better; big mitts like the GP100. Both are great revolvers.

GP100 is a six shot large frame revolver that is not well suited to carry every day due to size and weight.

SP101 is mechanically the same revolver scaled down in size in 5 shot (assuming .357)

Range/woods carry/home defense GP100.

Concealed carry SP101.

The Sp101 is likely my favorite gun to shoot. Easy to carry, manages recoil, and points perfectly for me.

Why do you say the GP100 might be more fun at the range? Particularly curious about this because that will be it's main use.

I find my GP 100 is easier to shoot at the range due to the bigger size, longer barrel (mine is 6"), and adjustable sights. I also can use it in several gun games that are easier with a revolver that can shoot 6 shots. I probably use my two SP 101 revolvers more since I frequently carry the 357 Mag at the farm and enjoy plinking with the 22 LR. The 22LR does have a very heavy trigger and occasionally blows back a little in my face but is otherwise a delight.

The SP101 is a concealable snubbie meant for shooting .357 mag. Although in practice it is best with .38 +p, if you like quick follow up shots. It can get a bit uncomfortable with magnum loads. However among available snubs, it is what you'd want for magnums.

The GP100 is a true .357 if there ever was one. It is large, heavy and meant for field, range, HD, and belt open carry. Much easier to shoot, including a better factory trigger, but you pay for it with the size/weight.

The LCR is a .38+p at best even though they do have a slightly beefier model chambered in .357 mag. I wouldn't carry it with magnum loads but that's just me.

My blued 4" GP100 in 357 is one of my favorite revolvers (shooting 38's). Good range gun and legal for a lot of the gun games as well (IPDA, IPSCA).

Range gun means you want it to be accurate and hit what you aim at, at distance even. 6" GP100 for that. Great fun with a red dot. I have both. Need to sell my SP101. I never shoot it.

Make sure the Ruger revolvers work for you. As in, you can shoot them and the ergonomics cause no issues.

in either model, the trigger-to-frame junction pinches the heck out of my finger at the end of travel, and I have developed blood blisters from shooting extended sessions with them.

Never had any issues with the LCR models, any Smiths, Colts, DWs, or even Chiappas. The metal-framed Rugers just have sharp angles on the rear of the trigger and inside of the trigger guard.

I've had several sp 101's in the past. the spurless models only. I love the way they look, but imo, they are heavy to carry for the capacity they offer, i tried pocket carry and it pulls on my pants, coat, etc so hard that its not comfortable for me. that and the recoil with fullhouse loads make my hand go numb. maybe its the grip or maybe its just me. Im not a tough guy. I still love the way they look and feel but if i cant comfortably carry or shoot it, it serves me no purpose. The GP on the other hand, is a sweet shooter but it just doesnt do it for me so i guess im a S&W guy. Try both and think of your intended purpose and follow your gut my friend. Best of luck to ya!
