I have done a bit of research into radios and it looks like for some you need an amateur radio license. Are there any worthwhile radios that don't require licensing or is the license worth it? If it's best to get the license then how hard is the prosses to get it?

Lost a good ole Ham today. KI4SYU Ernest was a fixture on the 82 and 43 up in wilkes/yadkin area. If you ever called out he would normally answer, one of the first people to answer me back when I first got my ham ticket.
