“Gas Shortage”

I must be under a rock or working from home too much... had no idea this is going on

I remember when there was a brief gas shortage in the earlier 2000's - around 07-08 I think...
Gas stations were out, long lines if any at all.
People were fencing gas by the gallon in the streets of uptown Charlotte.

We're rapidly approaching Mad Max level of social discord here in Mint Hill.

When Meck County got hit with a ransomware lockdown a couple years ago, it took them about a week and a half to dig out of the mess and restore things to normal. I would guesstimate the same here.

It was bad at lunch. I had to fill up this morning due to routine use, but no one was at the station this morning beside myself. Went out at lunch for a Redbull and there was a line at the Sheetz about a quarter mile long. Both Speedways in Clayton were out of gas.

Only thing I would add is that Colonial has more money riding on it and will probably more effectively throw resources at it than Char-Meck. Maybe that will speed things up.

Station near my house was out this morning at 7:00, working in Greensboro today, people are acting like hurricane or major snow storm is coming!
I just wish those that are collecting their government living wage would stay home, you don’t need gas, working people do!

I don't know anything about coding or hacking. I have to believe that the software used here is at or above "military grade" in terms of resistance to being defeated.

Didn't all this happen a couple of years ago, someone carried out some vandalism on the pipeline?
And a little further back, with hurricane damage?

No doubt. My tin foil is a bit tight on who is actually behind this one. The “Russian hackers” line always gives me pause.

No gas at Marathon or Lowe's where I usually stop. One block away Amoco has gas and the line is 60+ cars waiting 😁 😁 😁 🙋‍♀️

In Fuquay the Police are directing traffic at the Sheetz.

Lock up your ponies and bicycles, people will go crackers if this continues very long. Bet there is no line at the EV charging station.
Spot exchange price on a fillup......12 pack of good Charmin or box of 9m 115 gr :) and a 10 oz hand sanatizer

But their stuff is also spread out across the entire east coast instead of being in the dungeon of the government center downtown. I'm sure they have a datacenter but they also have to have controls and such all along their pipeline. Every damned bit of equipment with a hard drive in it has been compromised. Maybe I can sell a few gallons next week and buy some primers? 🙄

You would be surprised ,along the line, how much is still manual and not computerized

I don't think all their equipment has been compromised. One report I read said their IT system got hacked so they shut operations down as a "precaution". Dementia Biden said He wants to get the Arabs to help with some tankers of gas coming to the East Coast. Bam, higher prices and getting our oil from the Arabs again. Coincidence???

You'd think so... but probably not
Look up some of Dan Tentler's talks. he's a security guy who rides the line between being a creepy underworld hacker and a guy who does contract work helping companies fix security. He reported some stuff on companies leaving their security cameras open to the public, using default passwords, etc. Any place doing that probably has weak security elsewhere too, and that was demonstrated.

I meant the virus/hack is military grade, not Colonial’s systems.

That said, it’s unfathomable that employees working at a critical infrastructure facility could be so careless and/or have the ability to accidental let something in. That’s like the president writing the launch codes on the back of his hand. Expecting them to be a little more careful isn’t too big of an ask.

ah, well yeah, that's different then.

Back in the late 90s and early 00s, i was at a umich. it was amazing the number of "best of the best" students who would be in a public computer lab, leave their computers unlocked, and leave for the day. Every now and again i reconfigured their email so that every email they sent was labeled as coming from "dumb ass" or some other suitable thing. Similarly, on the network drives, everybody had a public folder, and a private folder. there was a lot of stuff that was not supposed to be public on the public shares... And that was 20yrs ago, so i imagine many of those students are now in other jobs out there, making the same mistakes.

You don't need military grade hacks when you have that kind of lax security.
My public shares generally had things like goatse relabled as driverslicense.jpg

the guy with the ladder... people wont ask... but will say, "hey, let me get that door for you. "
