aka 1 Mile

I had some serious issues with math today, or old eyes, either way I struggled to even get the spotter to see my shots.

It was frustrating because I thought I had my dope figured out. After missing a couple at the Mile I fell back to 1,000. No problems there at all, elevation was spot on. 1,000 needed 8.6 Mil, dialed that in and rang the steel. Easy peasy.

Ran my numbers again for the Mile, dialed all of the available elevation in my scope and had to hold 11 mil on the reticle. No problem, my Burris has a great reticle and hold overs are easy....unless you misread “20” as “10”.

:eek::eek:

Doh! I probably blew through 20 rounds holding 36 Mil instead of the 26 I needed! No wonder the spotter didn’t see anything!

Once I figured out my mistake, I was able to make 4/10 hits. Winds were inconsistent at around 3-5mph, with some gusts and lulls thrown in for good measure.

All around a beautiful and fun morning on the long range!

It happens. I’ve done the same stupid crap at matches and cost myself points. My kid turned my microjust steam on my seating die once, just happened to be right before I loaded ammo for a match. Got to the match and hard to push hard as hell to close my bolt. Bullets jammed bad. My spawn had spun out the die and had me seating my bullets way to long. Lol

Every round shot way higher than my normal load that day.

For those of us that can’t identify the brass...

Caliber?

Oh yeah... did something stupid at the 600 yard line at Perry this year. 1st shot was a mid-ring 9 @ 3 o'clock. Needed 1-1/2 MOA left and spun the knob the wrong way. No wonder I shot a wide 7 @ 3 o' clock!!!!

Just learn the lesson and apply it to the future!

If you can squeeze a 20moa mount / base on top of your 20 moa base you can take off 5.8 mil off that hold. Or find a 30 moa mount / base and get 8.7 mil off the hold.

Meh...if I hadn’t goofed up, the reticle had plenty of hold over. The Spuhr mount has a 6Mil (~20moa) cant.

I don’t shoot past 1,000 often enough to worry about it.

I understand fully.

I did the same type of situation in WV in 2005 but at 1100yds with a M24 and a ultra 10x.

It only takes a simple brain fart.

What bullet? I’m running 140 Berger hybrid at 2805. I want to try the 130’s for more speed but these 140’s are scary accurate

Hornady 140 ELD-M

Tikka barrels have a rep for being a little slow. I can’t argue with the accuracy though.

What length barrel? That’s not terribly slow. I could push mine faster but they’re accurate here. Like yourself I’m sure.

I did have to go to small primer brass and use cci magnum primers to get them at this speed without pressure issues

The Clinton House Plantation, Clinton, SC

I have heard about that place but never been. What all do you have to do to shoot there? Have to be a member? A guy at the Cadillac dealership told my dad that they had a mile range.

You do not need to be a member. They have 1,000 yards all the time, the mile is only a couple times per month.

The Clinton Plantation is doing their Mile Day this weekend if anyone wants to try it out. I'll be at the meet and greet. Call them to sign up ahead of time.
