Took the new takedown backpacker out today. Federal Auto Match ammo. Gave up after about 60 rounds. 6 FTE’s, 5 stove pipes, 3 FTF. Not what I expected.

Any tuning tips for these guns? The barrel fit was done as instructed.

Thanks.

Federal Automatch has the benefit of being relatively inexpensive and of being very available.

And, that would be it, in terms of benefits.

I do have several 22 firearms that run these OK and I have a 325 round box here someplace that I got at Walmart because the clerk with the key just happened to be there.
Not a good reason, I know.

The comment about Mini Mags is a good one.

Regarding 'tuning' ... the 10/22 is off-the-chart in terms of stuff you can 'do' to it. Probably a good idea to wait and see if a simple ammo change fixes your reliability issue.

Just went through a lot of similar 10/22 issues with another forum member the other day, and we resolved all his challenges in about 90 minutes of diligent sleuthing. Some ammo related, some magazine related, some cleaning related. Since the symptoms present similarly for different anomalies, it's hard to know what change affected what fix. This is an experience thing I guess I picked up over the past several years which I did not ask for and don't really want. Hope you don't have to do all that, too. But when the rifle is playing well, it's delightful.

I must’ve been lucky. I have 3 long .22s with no issues Ruger, Tippman and a S&W M&P. I lied, I have some pumps and a lever gun too.

If it is brand new consider sending it back to Ruger. A friend of mine sent a new LCP back and they replaced the entire top half with a short turn around.
”They” say Ruger has great customer service (the gun communities version of “she has a great personality “).

I'd try to run 100-200 rounds of CCI Mini Mags through it and then try the Federal again. We've always said, "If your gun won't run on Mini Mags, there's something wrong with your gun."

I have screened plenty ammo options in finicky .22s, CCI Blazer is right up there with Minimag energy and now available in bulk packs at decent price.

Fed Auto match is great - in some guns. Balked a lot when my wife shot my Buckmark but ran perfect in the SW22 Victory.

Taking the takedown out again soon but indoors a couple weeks ago it test fired automatch just fine.
Your FTFs are probably due to short stroking IMHO. Try some Blazer or minimags as suggested.

As stated - lubed up?
And, B, what ammo?

I have a takedown model, never any issues.

My 10/22 had a lot of issues when I first bought it, sent it back to Ruger, they polished the feed ramp. All good now!

Just ran a bunch of Fed auto match thru the takedown without issue. Spat the cases right out.

Cycle 100 rds of hotter ammo thru it and maybe take the bolt out (easy) to clean, lube and check for any spots that are rubbing.

Of course you may have a soft lot of ammo - it happens.

Glad it worked out. All 22LR are ammo specific. Same model, same ammo -- different results. Keep trying loads till you find the one each gun likes and mark it down. 10/22's are probably my favorite gun in the world. Before the AR got popular the 10/22 is the lego's for big kids. I have them from bone stock for nostalgia, to some custom parts to ones that don't have an actual Ruger part in sight. As serious as all the training, prep, hunting, long range precision comps, etc gets (which I'm not discounting) sometimes shooting and guns are just supposed to be fun. In my mind nothing embodies this more than the 10/22. Cheers

I would suggest cleaning out the rifle if that was not done previous. It seems Federal has been lacking in recent outings from their Auto Match, Trophy Match and Game Shok, all have been less than stellar. I would recommend either CCI VH or standard.

I run my 10/22 takedown almost always suppressed. It’s zeroed for Fed auto match. That ammo has been hit or miss of late but it has run very well suppressed thru it as I think it helps with some additional blowback power it may not otherwise get unsuppressed.

Honestly Federal auto match was my favorite plucking load for my autoloaders. But they seemed to have also increased their prices paired with so-so performance. I have recently switch to almost exclusively CCI SD.

It definitely was up for awhile but can now be found at WM for around $18/325rd again. But yeah, can’t go wrong w cci

I’ve had good luck running Norma Tac-22 in all my 22s never had any feed problems no fliers and always fires. Use them in 10/22 takedown and tactical also in some AR platforms. If you watch the Norma website they do run specials at times.

Mini-mags was all it took. Ran 100% reliably through 100rds. Will try other ammo after a while. Thanks.
I’ve had good luck with Aguila that Sportsman’s often has on sale with my backpacker 10/22. Accuracy isn‘t bad. CCI SV has been reliable as well (at least now that its broken in) and the most accurate I’ve found without trying target rounds.

Love Aguila, their subs and 60grn loads handle wonderfully out of the ol Glenfield 25.
