12 Strong...coming in January. Horse Soldiers was good read, don't know if Thor can pull it off though...we'll see.

Great book. Because it was so good I think any movie just won't do it justice. I hope I'm wrong because I think it could be a great movie.

Just watched a pre-screening of the movie "12 Strong, Declassified Horse Soldiers" here in Afghanistan. Its about ODA 595 right after 9/11 and their mission against the Taliban (5th SFGA, my old unit). Against great odds and their accomplishments. Great movie with lots of M4A1 Block I's. Comes out on the Jan 19th. My only grip is where the heck was the Team Sergeant!

My gripe is that one actor who is a raving leftist nutjob.

Just one?

The extremely vocal one who was in Boardwalk Empire. Can’t remember his name. I’m sure some of the others are too, but to insult people who are the main audience for a movie like this was rediculous.

I’m actually flying out to VA next weekend to see it with some friends.

Good movie, not great movie. They tried to cram a lot into two hours, I thought the sound editing was not great, often the dialogue was hard to follow in here. I give the tactics a B minus.

I so wanna see this flick. I’m not really a tv/movie guy.
Same situation, I will wait for the movie to make it to on-demand and by then y’all would’ve given me the real reviews if it is worth my 2 hours.

I'd like to see it again, with subtitles. I missed a lot of the dialogue. It didn't nearly live up to the book. I think movies like this are best made for Netflix or Amazon where they can do it a la Band of Brothers and keep the important details in.

I sprang the dough for the IMAX experience Wednesday night at 10:30 pm. Late and pricey but worth it. We were alone in the theater save for 5 other people and the audio was so loud I didn't think about sleeping! Really entertaining modern western with the typical Jerry Bruckheimer slam editing.

Not sure what SF was like in 2001, but Marine Recon units used a whole mishmash of different equipment and gear, a lot of it was COTS (commercial off-the-shelf).
Gear was correct for the time period. SOMPOD kits on M4A1s, PVS-7/14, M24 SWS, SATCOM antenna. Movie was based on the officers prospective. In SF its the NCOs that make the team.

The M4s were what we used; and the Blackhawk gear was definitely correct for the period. In 2001 they were about the only thing in town.

The rest of it not terribly familiar.

Just finished watching this for the first time, it's on Cinemax currently (not sure about the others).
I liked it, but it wasnt great (to me).
I liked it more than American Sniper, not as much as Lone Survivor.

It was OK.
Not great, but not horrible.
They definitely could have paced it better.

The best part, for me, was in the special features; you get to see what the real Captain Mitch Nelson looks like next to Thor.
They don’t look anything alike.

But then again neither do Marcus Luttrell and Marky Mark

When they look similar it's cool, but if they dont I really dont care.
Not for these movies, anyway. These arent faces the general public, or myself, know. Sure, once the movie blows up they become famous, but before...not so much, so I dont think it's a big deal

Good 2 hours. Jerry Bruckheimer was the screenwriter and he's good with action flicks.

This was about ODA 595, a special ops team who had to deploy on horseback to get into the tough areas of Afghanistan for infiltrating and breaking the backbone of the Taliban. Decent acting, good cinematography, decent portrayal of gun fights, and pretty cool video of the Chinook infil/extraction.

Chris Hemsworth isn't a puss Thor in this one, so that's a good start. Several other noteworthy actors. Worth the rent on Netflix.

Ha, just watched this an found an old thread about it. (Didn’t bump the necro thread)

I give it a C- had a decent cast and a decent budget, but squeezing everything they did into 2 hours took away from what it could’ve been.

Agree, excellent film.

Good flick, not great. So many liberties for the story that did not happen, but like the produce of Top Gun said, 'they are making a movie, not a documentary.'

If it is between the book and the movie, watch the movie first, then read the book.
