Had this spare 14.5” pinned and welded Bushmaster barrel sitting in the parts bin for a bit, but I wanted to lose the FSB and add a full length rail. I didn’t trust the clamp on two piece gas block designs I’d seen, and had doubts that they’d clear the I.D. Of most rails.
Troy makes a few rails that will mount to a standard barrel nut, so I started there.
Decided on a 13” Bravo rail.
Went to work trimming down the FSB to clear the new rail.
Side note: those cheapy dremel bits wear FAST!
Used a sawzall to get a rough cut and took off the bayo lug and sling ears and the largest part of the front sight.
Squared it off a bit with the grinder.
Combination of dremel and files until everything cleared the handguard and looked fairly even.
Checking clearance.....Ziva approved...excuse the parts bench...in the process of reorganizing...but I’m easily distracted.
Had some rustoleum semi gloss on hand, wiped it down with mineral spirits, masked it off, and gave it a quick spray.
Just waiting on it to cure before I do the final mounting of the handguard.
