Mom’s car, 1,000 miles away from me, so obviously I get the call.

in 15 years the rear driver’s side door window has never been regularly used. A few months ago it slid down a few inches. She pushed it back up, it slid down again. She pushed it up and taped it inside and out and that’s holding.

She was at the stealership looking at a new one and asked if they’d give her an estimate to fix it. They said sure but that she’d have to pay a diagnostic charge. She asked how much that would be, they said they don’t know until they get into it. She decided to pass.

I told her to take it to the body shop that her neighbor recommended, that it can’t be a big deal to fix.

In the meantime, am I wrong? Can this be anything more serious than a broken clip or pin?

45 minute job depending on how long it takes you to find all the screws on the door panel. Will need a cheap trim removal tool to access them since its under the trim on the door pull.

(Regulator as Pogue noted)

My mom has a 2008 X3 and the same thing happened recently. It was the regulator. Hopefully she can find someone other than the dealer to fix it. They charged my parents $3200 to fix and a few other minor things. They then offered $5000 trade on a new one. Her’s only has 60k miles and is a M-sport they bought new and only serviced at the dealer.

I'm not familiar with that specific design but in some cases when you push the window up by hand you can pull it out of the channel or track. The glass can fall into the door frame and shatter if that happens.

Definitely recommend taking it to a private mechanic instead of a dealer for a job like that. It should be cheap fast and easy.

They know exactly what the diagnostic charge is, they wanted to empty her wallet.
Here are p/n for the dogs RIGHT side = 51333448643; LEFT Side = 51353448645. Ebay or dealer.

YouTube it… it might be a simple fix that even a McDonalds employee can do.
