2020 gardening thread

My stuff is blooming. Tried pollinating squash and cucumbers myself. We’ll see. Beans I planted last Sunday morning are coming up. Put stakes at all my 40 tomato plants this week, tied a few that needed it. I had made some cages, they’re too big, so I took those off and used stakes, and put the cages around the cucumber plants for them to climb on. Soaker hose wasn’t working good on cantaloupe I planted them in hills and the water tends to run away from it. So I changed out soaker hose this week to drip tube and put a one gallon per hour drip emitter on each hill. Works a lot better. Installed a timer on the hose, which made me discover that the faucet was leaking. So yesterday evening I took the guts out of the faucet and rebuilt it. Good to go now

We have harvested squash, bell pepper, banana pepper, and potatoes so far. Currently prepping another plot to do a second planting.

We took our first 5 gallon bucket of potatoes. Yukon Gold. We are unskilled in this, and probably picked it early, as some of them were barely eating size. We got about a pound and a half of them. Mighty fine eating when they are fresh!IMGP1234.JPG

I like seeing how you guys have your gardens set up and pictures of how things are progressing. Here are a couple pics of ours after finishing up this evening.

Fyi no one lives on the old farm house. We just use it for shade when we’re taking a break and to keep tools and such out of the rain.

My wife says "that is a stunning picture!" Do you mind listing what you are growing again?

Thanks tans, I really appreciate the compliment. Since you made a video, I will do the same. I’m not nearly as eloquent as yourself but if I can get to it today I will, if not I’ll have one for your viewing pleasure tomorrow.

You guys keep up the work, it might just pay off with all the crazy going on these days.

Black spots on pepper leaves? Went out and found a distressing thing this a.m. SEVERAL of my pepper plants have black fungus looking spots on the leaves. Looking online, it seems this is sometimes just a result of too much water, and I can't stop the rain (sorry, John Fogerty!). There are anti fungal apps, but it looks like this won't help if the rain just comes again, as it is supposed to do for the next few days.

Any input here?

Try the baking soda fungus spray. Between rains.

The crushed stone circle is very very nice.

Thanks, we'll be putting that same rock around our raised bed section as well.

@tanstaafl72555

Here’s that video.

Also, I’d like to say that after watching it myself, I never knew I sounded like that.

That was absolutely delightful! Thank you so much for posting it. You are a lucky man.
.... and I understand totally about hearing yourself. Somebody told me the reason for that is that we "hear" our voices thru our sinuses, which act like a really rich recording studio, and we think our voice sound richer, deeper, and just "better." I listen to myself on tape and think "My God, I sound like .... " I dunno.

I find your accent UTTERLY delightful. It makes me think: "he sounds like a good guy. I wish I knew him" and more importantly "I think he would be a great neighbor"

Dunno if you are a fan of Jason Isbell, but your comment and the vid reminded me of this:

Thanks for being you and sharing.

2020-06-21-111349.jpg So, I went to Horror Freight and bought myself a 9 dollar blacklight flashlight. I heard they are good for spotting hornworms, and we have been spotting some sign (the little turd like clumps of eggs) and Carole found one the other day.
I just went out there, and WOW! They shine out like Christmas tree lights! Easy peasy to spot. Popped em off and stuck them in a jar of soapy water. That trick WORKS, guys!

Garden finally made something today. This cucumber is worth about $300 between breaking ground, buying plants, irrigation, fertilizer

Ha, ain't that the way. Next fish I catch only cost me $35.82
If all this stuff produces it’ll be totally worth the trouble. And I’ve got space for more stuff next year and will lay it out a little better. Got some gaps and some places I left room for things like watermelon and cantaloupe that aren’t doing a whole lot. Chilly nights last week I’m sure hurt some stuff

If you find any that look like this don't kill them. Put them in a jar without the lid. Braconid wasps are great little horn worm destroyers.

Saw some signs of squash bugs starting so get to go try to take care of them soon. Saw a trick on youtube of taking duck tape and wrap a layer or two backwards or sticky side out around your hand and it works good for picking up the bugs or eggs and then dispose of it once full or done.

THIS... is why the internet exists! thank you.

I really liked it cause it was stupid simple and no chemicals involved or to worry about, I'm sure about any type of tape or sticky object would work. Other thing one mentioned was setting a trap by just putting a short board down on ground flat and the adults would collect under it on the back side just like they do leaves. Havent tried this yet to see if its true as well.

Well our garden peas are wilting like Trump about the 2nd !

Peas are coming along and peppers are putting out like hippy chicks. Got 3 tomatoes so far. Sweet potatoes are waiting on warm weather but russet are jumping good.

3 of 5 of our apple tress are loaded, spraying for Jap beetle today

Jap persimmon have a lot of fruit, hope it makes it

Been getting nice carrots. Got a few zucchini. Most of the peppers are starting to come on. Tomatoes look good and have a few huge ones I hope ripen soon. Having a hard time with beans right now. Seeds might be too old and just not sprouting. My guy can't get anymore of this type either, which sucks. Apparently seeds are the new toilet paper. Good grief.

Still figuring out the staking on the zucchini but they really look good so it's going OK. Think I have the tying up figured out now.

What type of bean seeds you need?

We have been using Eagle Beans. It's a bush bean. Not really sure what we are going to replace it with just yet. Probably do Crowder Peas in the fall. Hard to go back to half runners after bush beans.

I discovered that trick last year growing maters for the first time. I also picked up some bt bacteria to wipe out caterpillars and not hurt the beneficial bugs. They eat some of the plant that’s sprayed and their gut’s toast. A little goes a long way.

*edit* they look like this under a black light, the tomato, and pepper plants’s are burgundy colored.

These are better than the Tenderites bush beans I used to plant:

Also do yourself a favor and plant these pole beans. I've been planting them for years and buy enough seeds for at least two plantings. I also let some of them go to seed for storage:

Thanks. Just ordered some. They look just like the Eagles I was planting.

Looking good @Mirac. I’m still interested in seeing how that teepee comes along. Looks like it’s getting started.

I didn’t like beets as a kid and have recently ( past year or two) started eating them. They’ve been store bought in a can but we picked some last night and the wife fixed them, good lord the ones from food lion don’t even have a taste compared to the ones from the garden.

We put in our second planting of carrots, bush beans, pole beans,. Picked up more plants cucumbers, tomatoes, jalapeños, watermelon, cantaloupe.
