2024 24

Looking forward to it. Something besides Basketball and Football.

Like hockey. Went to some live games, like that better.

Today 59 cars will compete through four classes
GTP
LMP-2
GTD-Pro
GTD

GTP is the top class, these are hybrid prototypes that all have the same electric motors onboard but varying ways of using those motors. They also will have different engines, from big V8s, like the Cadillacs have, to smaller turbo engines. BMW, Porsche, Acura, and Cadillac competing in that class. Lamborghini and Ferrari will be joining sooner than later
In this class you'll see some of the big names in sports car racing driving, including some from F1 too

LMP2 is a prototype class that's sort of like Indy - choose a chassis maker, use X engine, go race. It's idea is to keep the cost a bit lower (example, a GTP chassis is said to be $2M, this class is more like 500k)

GTD classes are the porsches, lambos, audi, corvette, mustang, astons, ferraris etc
They're the 'normal' cars, race versions of street cars
Pro is an all pro driver line up
the other (am) has to have varying levels of drivers (bronze to gold)
In the past the cars have been the same but with differences on tire sizes, but not sure about this season/year

As I said above, there will be some big sportscar drivers competing today, some F1 folks, but I dont think any NASCAR guys this year
Nascar's Bubba Wallace drove in a Supra yesterday for the Pilot Challenge 3 hour race (maybe it's 2.5 or 3.5, whatever), but that's the only nascar guy there this weekend. He didnt do great. Turns out running into someone is bad, got a flat tire and that set them back a lap.

Apparently Brad Pitt was on premises this week filming for his upcoming racing movie
Pretty neat

A pic from the fan zone...God I miss going to this race
Life keeps getting in the way
"well I just bought a house"
"well we just got married and paying off the wedding"
"well Im in school again"

I wish the the Camaro from Hendrick was there running, but I guess they don't have provision.

Unlike LeMans, there is no 'garage 56' rule at IMSA
That said...years ago the DeltaWing got to run

But then you have to think about GM/Chevrolet and how they dont want competition within themselves (until this year you didnt see privateers running corvettes, for example). They have the corvette for GT, and the Cadillac for the upper class

What would be interesting would be comparing times at lemans from it to the corvette etc and then getting comparable lap times from Daytona

At 2:30 the NBC coverage ended and it switched to USA
The 24 didnt come on until right at 3p... why? A college basketball game.
Now, at 2:30 the game had 5 minutes left. Five minutes took up half an hour.
I hate basketball.

Oh, and after just over an hour of racing, there are 2 GT cars out
A lambo lost grip in the bus stop and hit the tire wall
Then one of the front runners, a Lexus, ran into a LMP2 car - it just had nowhere to go when the car got spun around right in front of it. While they'll likely get back in the race, they'll not be "IN" the race, too many laps lost. But they'll want to the points for the overall championship

What do think Chevy will in Cup when this Camaro thing plays put? Corvette? Malibu?

I went to one at Charlotte Speedway many years ago. I enjoyed it. Much more difficult driving and a lot of work.

I'm out in the field now so I'm unfortunately unable to watch, appreciatethe updates. 🤟

In the past, Peacock carries the entire race start to finish. IIRC, its free to watch on the app via phone or smart tv.

Yeah, they are doing that..but I aint got it.
So watching USA right now

Ford's new Mustang GT3 is doing really well for it's first race EVER. Both cars suffered from a 'faulty' trunk which partially separate from the car, but the one is currently leading the GT Pro category.

More crashes. One P2 car had a HARD hit coming out of the bus stop, thankfully the guy got out and walked away

#14 Lexus, which crashed early, got back out but 38 or 39 laps down
They'll make some of them back, but the chance of a class win is long gone

The Wayne Taylor Racing #10, a staple in the prototype class for the last twenty+ years, is off track. Apparently the car just shut down.
They're always a contender for overall winner and were running well

Sebastian Bordeis is off track. Again, front runner for overall winner is off in the horseshoe, this is the legendary 01 Chip Ganassi car
Car moving/driving, LOTS of sparks coming off the car
Tire? We'll see. This will hurt chances of a win

Less than six hours left and still some close battles taking place

When I first started going in 2001 to this race, and that was the first time I had HEARD of this race, it was always a surprise to wake up middle of the night and see how many, and who, had dropped out or crashed out.
Looking at this race, there's a huge number still running. Sure, some issues, but laps, not HOURS down.

In GTP the factory Porsche 963 are really coming on and will give cadillac a run for the win
LMP2 has a great battle up front too.

Still a lot of good racing over on USA!

Sorry I wasnt updating well
Ending was...odd.
Timing of the checkered flag was odd, the screen went from '2 to go' to 'checkered flag'

Porsche wins with their 963, the Cadillac was just a second behind and really battling, at one point less than half a second behind.

Close race in GTD, too.

Risi Ferrari got it's first class win in a Ferrari in decades (last time was twenty years ago in a prototype style car, not a 'Ferrari'
So good on them for that.

In LMP2 one of the guys on the team (driver) got a Rolex for the class win at the young age of only SEVENTEEN. WOW, that's a way to start your endurance racing career.

After I last posted the other Lexus caught fire leaving the pits, they said some debris on the manifold. But there werent a ton of failures, maybe 8 or so out of 59? The cars keep getting more and more reliable.
Was also neat to see how quickly they could replace stuff on these cars. Example being one of the 963 cars (was a factory car but I dont remember if it was #6 or #7): the whole front end was only two dzus fittings and it was on/off with electrical connectors and all (headlights, of course, part of that front end and some ducting). The Mustang's trunk was two clamps/fittings on the very back and that's it. They had it off and on in seconds.

And with that - brake changes - the Paul Miller BMW did a late brake change - rotors, and loaded calipers - in FORTY-FIVE SECONDS. Holy crap. They can pull the rotors and caliper off as one unit and have another back in it's place and wheel going on in less than a minute? Incredible. Thank you Ford GT crew from the 60s for giving this idea to the endurance racing world,. Oh how it's gotten so dang good over the decades and just 'part' of the race now.

The Ford Mustang had a good outing, some issues with their trunk lids, they'll have that sorted by Sebring in a month, for sure. Also, their rear wing was really swaying back and forth, while everyone elses was stable.
That'll be a car to watch out for, I could see them getting a win this season

Multi class road race with those type cars. Not a 24 lol.

Went to what one what?
Probably Camel GT
i was there, 4th turn,
geezeus were they fast and helluva braking to make left turn to enter the "then" road course in the infield... they exited infield at turn one and had that end and the back straight to accelerate ... and did they!!!!

I watched Kenny Roberts on a YZR500 run Charlotte road course many years ago.
Did not matter who or where on the track, he passed everyone.

Bad call, for sure.
