My current "long range" rifles are all AR15s. I would like to have a 22lr for cheap practice. The only 22lr rifles I have is a S&W 15-22 which is a clone of my main "battle rifle" and my savage b22.

Can you build a accurate dedicated 22lr upper for a decent price?

Savage FVSR, Ruger RPR .22, CZ makes a few, or splurge for an Anschutz

I have a savage b22 FVSR that I love. My concern is will I get good practice from my 22lr bolt gun what will help me with my ar main rifle?

I would think good reps with trigger control and breathing techniques would translate. It won't make you a tactical operator, but it should make you a better all around shooter. 22's are pretty unforgiving of poor technique. Ask me how I know that. :(

Why not use the 15-22?

Hey dale, good question. I might be wrong, but I believe that if your wanting to improve your quality time behind a trigger that's going to help you with your 5.56 score ? Then using a differently configured rifle really isn't going to help you. Its sort of like me thinking that if I practice with my 1911, it will help me with using my Thompson Contender for IHMSA competitions. I think you are on the right track about using a dedicated 22 LR upper to help reduce your ammo cost. But the problem with that is 22lr ammo is famous for being inaccurate unless you spend some money on match ammo. If you use the cheap stuff and miss the target, you wont know if it was you, the gun or the ammo, meaning you learned nothing by taking that shot. What I have found out, is that I really wanted to excel in a shooting sport ? I sucked up the thought of the price and paid it. Hope this helps..
