.22 conversion kits

The CMMG conversions I've had tended to be a bit ammo dependent in terms of accuracy.

The CMMG dedicated bolt/barrel kits are better IME but they are bloody proud of them.

I'm sorely tempted to give one of the 16" BCA 22LR uppers a go..... See how they did with their bolt and barrel combo.

Minute of FUN but the fast twist rate does open up pretty quickly as distances increase … with CCI MiniMags … 25 yards around 2-3” group or so 50 yards maybe 6” group … after that I’ve some flyers 10-12” off POA. Wind and the faster twist after 50 yards just seems to magnify everything.

Now a Tippmann M4 dedicated .22lr w/ the same MiniMags will hold under 1” at 25 yards if you do your part … 1-2” at 50 yards … an even out to maybe 100 yards with little to no wind it is capable of 3-4” groups. Not bad for a semi-auto with non-match ammo. I think S&W 15-22’s can do about the same.

As to using “dirty .22 rimfire” in a centerfire AR … sure it dumps way more stuff. It was suggest to me if possible run a mag of .223/5.56 after running rimfire to clear out the crap from the rimfire cartridges. It might help the gas bolt and gas tube along with pushing the copper plating out a little but the fire control group gets way more blow back in it than from centerfire and needs so attention.

Personally if you want an “occasional shooter” the CMMG is a fine and fun addition but if you’re gonna be running say class level amounts I’d be leaning more towards a dedicatedly .22lr AR.

yeah, i kind of wish i had just stuck with my drop in conversion instead of starting to order parts for a dedicated one

I can tell the difference and think of it this way, you won't be gumming up a 5.56 gas system.

I had the conversion in mine. Super fun, but not accurate at all with the 1:7. Also, make sure you run plated .22. Non plated stuff leads up the barrel REALLY quickly. I sold mine to a friend who was doing a pistol build. I'm looking at the BCA dedicated .22 uppers now too. I haven't been disappointed with anything I've bought from them.

ETA: Mags SUCK BALLS to load.

Black Dog mags are fine loaded by hand, and come in weird colours.
