Soooo. I test fired / sighted in a AR pistol with 75 gr ammo. Specially Hornady T2 Tap. I have researched over the years that 55 gr M193 is only effective (Fragmentation) out of a 16+ inch barrel. I have several of these that I shoot M193 and Vmax loads through with great results Basically I would like to know if my one Specific AR pistol shooting 75 gr Hornady loads will be sufficient for self defense/hunting out of a 10.5” barrel. I don’t want any argument about this but some experience in the field or ballistic test results.

BTW I don’t search YouTube at all.

Don't know about the Tap 2 but SOCOM uses the Black Hills Mk262 77 gr OTM. I've seen it drop bad guys out to 600m from a 10.3" I've dropped three NC whitetails from my 14.5" with the same bullet at 25-50 m. Remember no bullet is magic but you have to place it on target and know your and equipment's capability.

Without debating, referencing YouTube, or acting like I’m a ballistics expert, the answer is “yes”.

Since I have a bunch of 75gr Prvi HPBT from years ago, that’s my HD round of choice.

I can't imagine a 70+ gr doing a lot in a 10.5 inch barrel. I absolutely can't or won't dispute CD's observations for sure, but I also believe there is a better choice for 223, if you Hand Load anyway. In my 10.5 inch guns and my load with the 50 CEB Raptors I am getting anything from 2750-2800 fps depending on the barrel. In one of my 10.5s I am getting 2835 fps. This is still viable terminals for that bullet. But, I also won't be shooting anything at 600 yards either, I can barely see a big barn at 600 yards, much less anything smaller........ Raptors are wicked, like their NameSakes.....and it does not understand it weighs 50 grs when it comes to penetration. That's my story.

Any company sell Raptors loaded? Unfortunately I am not loading my own, yet.

Thanks. I’ll check it out.

Hornady makes a Black load specially for SBR/pistols.

The load uses a 75 grain Interlock HD slug.

The Hornady item number is 81296

If I come across any, I’ll be sure to try some out. Unfortunately this is not the best time to be looking.

Hornady also manufactures a T2 cartridge specifically designed for short barrels. Looks like its a SP instead of a HP, but I haven’t been able to find any info that indicates whether it is a bonded soft-point or not....

Good info. Regardless no matter what gets hit with that load from any barrel length isn’t going to laugh it off and run away. At least I hope not:(

I don’t have any experience with the Hornady ammunition, but I have done some work with Speer Gold Dot 75s (bonded SP). The factory offering is loaded to .223 pressures only. With handloading, I can push it to 5.56 pressures and so far, I have been pleased with the results.

I have a couple hundred rounds of GD 55 grain. Shoots good but I don’t have any kind of first hand ballistic damage. I feel anything defense/hunting within 100 yards will do its damage. I’ll be dead with no response if I’m wrong. Lol

Same here. The only data I have on my Gold-Dot loads is what I’ve obtained on my chrono. The only thing I have shot with the rounds is paper and steel..no gel tests. I’m pretty confident the load would perform well on game, but I have not had a chance to test it and quite honestly, I don’t know if/when that will happen. I’m not morally opposed to hunting at all...I’ve taken plenty of squirrel, deer and everything in between, but for some reason or another, I am at a point where I do not have a desire to kill anything.

I used to love squirrel shooting. It’s been a couple years since I’ve been out. Just haven’t done much hunting either lately. Although I was pleased with a mole kill while I was mowing Wednesday. Little bastard has been busy in my back yard.
