My range has a 500 yard rifle range with metal at 300, 400 and 500 yards. I know with the 308 I can hear the bullet hitting out to 400 yards.

My question is, with a 223 do you think that you can hear the bullet hit at 300 yards? I am shooting a 55 grn FMJ at 2900 f/sec

At 500 it'll be tough with ear pro on but if it's relatively quiet you can hear it out there too.

I shoot out to 400yds regularly with 55 gr and can hear hits with my electronic ear pro but sometimes if there's any wind it's questionable. I'm going to mod my stands so that the targets swing a little more just for extra confirmation

You might want to switch to a heavier bullet with a better BC.

Dave I was thinking about that but the twist in the gun is a little slower than normal. I think it is a 1:10 twist

If there's not a lot of other noise going on, then you should be able to hear it out to 400 no problem with active ear pro. Only issue I've found with active is the wind noise can be very distracting some days. One other thought, a high power, quality spotting scope should be able to see the bullet splash on the target if you can't hear it.

We heard it ringing at 800 yards yesterday with 55 grain Hornady VMAX. The steel is only 1/4 inch AR500 and it rings like a bell anyways.
