.224 Valkyrie

I have been reading up on this. It’s the next new thing, how popular will it become I don’t know. I just bought a grendel and for my use deer hunting and paper punching for now I will stick to the Grendel.

:35 in the video...."extreme long range performance in a BOLT-ACTION RIFLES". MSR Im guessin is modern sporting rifles...AR's, so why mention bolt guns at all? Maybe I missed something....wouldnt be the first time!

It's certainly interesting, just not real sure just how practical it will be long term. I'm sure it will find it's niche within the marketplace and have a group of devotees.

A big question for me is projected barrel life. If it's in the ballpark of 2k rounds, then it would be interesting to just what it can do with the 70/73/75/80 line of .224 projectiles

One item to be aware of with this caliber is that the parent cartridge (6.8SPC /.30Remington) does NOT use either a .223Rem or .308 bolt face. Not a big issue and not even a consideration for somebody buying a factory assembled rifle, but for anybody doing a build for an AR platform or bolt gun it is important to note.

90 gr bullet supersonic to 1300 yards..

Grendel is 123gr and supersonic to 1200...

224 isn't anything amazing. People just trying to squeeze every bit out of an AR platform, I feel. Get whatever semi auto you can Afford to shoot and then get your crazy accuracy caliber in a bolt, imo.

My buddy was reading up on this caliber tonight... few uncertain areas for us

Is it a 223 bullet, in a necked down 6.8 case?

I understand you need a 6.8 bolt and mags, but a regular 223 barrel would work?

Calling misses at that range will be challenging.

I’ve got the 6.5 Grendel which is all the more AR platform I’ll need in this state. Anything for longer then that, I’d take my 6.5 Creedmoor

I don't like 223/5.56 I like bigger slower old school guns that I can kill any thing from rabbit to bear with. Like 30-30, 35rem, 45-70, and such. A 30-06 and a 308 is plenty enough long range for me. I like the idea of this bullet it sounds fantastical. I just don't shoot that far.

Would like to see the velocities with the bullets and barrel length used. Would like comparison to the .22 Nosler. A Mk12 SPR rifle in the .224 Valkyrie would be interesting. I do have couple Green Mountian bbls in .223 Wylde chamber with a 1:5 and 1:6. Need to try some single loaded 90grs in it :D

You do much rabbit hunting with a 45-70? :D

Unique brass, 3-4 times the expense, less than half the barrel life, little commercial support....

I think I’d stick with .22 Nosler if I was trying to wring everything out of the 22 caliber.

Also, someone already necked 6.5 Grendel to .224 called the “224 AR Mag”.

27gr RL 15 and 82gr Berger =2920fps
27gr RL15 and 90gr Berger = 2860fps

I don't see an appreciable advantage over 6.5 Grendel, and the ammo and barrel costs certainly go way up.
It's hard to imagine that I'll ever need the difference between 1200 and 1300 yards in an AR.
If you wanted to shift the envelope a little, I'm surprised that a 6mm wouldn't be a slightly better point on the curve between 5.56 and 6.5.
