Looking at getting a 22lr pistol for multiple reasons. Just had a surgery on my right elbow and don’t want to have to wait 3 months to shoot. Most important reason is I don’t have one. Mainly want to have it for plinking/ target shooting, gun for my family to shoot, cheaper gun to shoot. Want to keep it under $500. Wanted to hear from you guys what your preferences are.

I have several .22 pistols; some semi-auto, some revolvers. I enjoy them all, but the biggest surprise to me was the Ruger SR22 - I didn’t expect to love it but it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot. Might be my favorite plinker.

Ruger Mark. The newer ones are easier to clean, but the older ones are not as devilishly complicated as they are made out to be. Too many video walkthroughs exist to struggle with them anymore.

They are reliable, simple, ergonomic, and the magazines and spare parts are abundant.

My Buckmark Camper has an amazing trigger and is ridiculously accurate. Possibly my favorite gun to shoot.

Agreed.

Fun to shoot, affordable, and having large and small swappable grip sleeves makes it perfect for a family plinker.

My only criticism is the bass-ackwards safety.

Agree on the safety, but I’ll allow it for a range plinker. Love that pistol!

Ruger Mkii if you can find one, Ruger Sr22, I've heard good things about the Taurus TX22 but can't find one and I love my Keltec CP33

Ruger mk2 and you’ll have some coin left for ammo.

If you want to keep practice up for a pistol, the Taurus TX22 is freakin' great. Especially for as inexpensive as it is. I got one for my daughter for Christmas. Good trigger, and it eats any 22lr you can throw at it. It's a fantastic training tool and I break it out sometimes because it's dang fun.

I have to agree about the TX22. I have one, love everything about it. Eats anything, great trigger, feels good in the hand. If you get one, get the stainless steel recoil assembly from Lakeline, the polymer one it comes with will tear up the slide eventually. I love mine so much I have another one on the way.

Ruger MkII but the trigger isn't the best. Past that, I had a TC that was set up for competition that was extremely accurate and fun to shoot. Being a single shot, it forces you to aim and slows down ammo consumption.

Buckmarks or Ruger Mk xx are both can't miss. Decide up front if you want a red dot or not, if on the fence get a model that has a rail already.

Huge aftermarket for both models, modify and upgrade to your heart's content.

Ruger MK series. Endless supply of parts, mags are low cost and you have Ruger customer service and warranty that stand behind the products
Pistols are easy to work on , easy to maintain plenty of videos out there to watch to help you learn

My Buckmark is easily my favorite .22 to shoot. Will shoot anything (except CCI for some reason) like I bought BIG BUCKS ammo for it. Points very naturally and it's like I have a laser beam it's so accurate. It even makes me look good! 🤣

Smith & Wesson 22C I have two. One has almost 60,000 rounds through it and the only problem I've had with it was a roll pin that kept working out and a broken firing pin. Super easy to clean.

My vote is S&W Victory, cheap and goes bang every time...mine has the threaded barrel and cool sights! and a lot easier to clean than some.

I have several Ruger Mk's, 22/45, Buckmark, and a couple of S&W 422's. The SR22 is the only Ruger, ever, that I really didn't care for.
The MK's are my favorite, but I love the 422's because they are so easy to swap the bbl nut out for a threaded one for suppressor use. Keep that in mind if you have plans for going quiet.

I wasn’t a fan of Mk’s but a 22/45 won me over and I’m liking it more and more. That said it’s a heavier gun and you mention arm strength. So a TX22 might be a better choice. Don’t own one but a couple shooters I respect rave about theirs.

I have a couple of Ruger MK II. Love them both, one is a heavier, longer barrel, the other is the plain jane version.

If you get one or a browning buckmark, you MUST get the ultimate cliploader.

Duuuuuude I love my Glock 44.......

Another SR22 vote here. Its a great little pistol...accurate, eats and cycles everything Ive put through it, fits the hand well...and a ton of fun supressed, too 🙂
One more thing to add about the SR22 is that it can be limp-wristed, which makes it a good trainer. You gotta grip it.

While I like revolvers and have several revolvers, I would definitely go with a semiauto pistol. With a revolver,, you not only have to clean the barrel, you have to clean all 6 or 8 or 9 chambers, too.

I have two Ruger Mark II Pistols, one with target open sights and one with a red dot. I end up shooting the one with the red dot more often because I shoot it better.

I will say that the SR22 used to be my favorite. The Smith and Wesson Victory that I shot today is my new favorite. Smooth as silk and stupid fun.

TX-22 has impressed me. I have numerous .22 pistols and this one ranks right up there. Bang for the buck, it's hard to beat it. Mags are just a little pricey, not terrible. I had to order direct from Taurus.

My TX-22 has not jammed one time with bulk ammo.

I also love my MKIV 22/45.

Just buy a Nelson conversion for your old 1911. It will be accurate and reliable enough to reach High Master, and save you money depending upon your alternate choice. Can be had with Iron sights or RDS. Used at Camp Perry to make some decent scores.
Get well, take it off and use the 1911 in its original caliber.
