Went out yesterday with the Hawken. It was a bit windy but still good to shoot.

I had a mix of patches, some bought with lube, others were scraps from the wife's sewing. The store bought patches were the perfect size, no trimming needed but seemed way too thick. There us no way I could stuff the ball in the tube.

When I switched to the 'pillow ticking' the fit was much better. The cloth weave and rifling were pressed into the lead. I used lube, spit and dry with no perceived difference. Ran cleaning patches every 3rd shot.

My friend was shooting at 100yds and since we were sharing the spotting scope my target was also at the same range. It took a few shots to get the load up, approximately 70grs, then a few turns on the sights to get on a 12"x12" target.

I need some coaching! Anyone well versed in BP willing to help me?

No pix of the group?

Barrel: 28” octagonal, twist: 1:48
Powder: Pyrodex P (FFFg equivalent), I'm looking for some 2Fg.
Caps: CCI Magnum #11
Ball: Hornady 45cal .440"

Am I expecting too much at 100yds?

Nope. Your twist rate is a compromise rate between PRB and conical but should still shoot decently. Check your PM

Wow I literally just told my wife I’d love to get a black powder rifle of some sort because I’ve always been fascinated by the process, I’ve shot match locks, flintlocks & more modern percussion reproduction rifles that the owners setup & loaded for me over the years, but I’ve always wanted one of my own to play with.

I’ll definitely keep an eye on this thread!

Well Tarowah, I'm in Winston. And by coinkydinky, I'm going to the range. I've heard black powder smoke kills the covid19 plague so I plan to immerse myself in it today.

If you boys love Black Powder, then y'all need to come see (whenever the hell things get back to normal) an N-SSA Skirmish. We compete with Civil War Muskets, Carbines, Revolvers, Smoothbores, Repeaters, Mortars and Cannons, all firing real bullets.... We do it in Statesville NC about 4-5 times a year. Assuming COVID-19 is over (or the weak ones are dead by then) mark your calendars for September 12. That's our most likely next shoot for this year.

We compete as TEAMS all firing at once at breakable targets (ceramic tiles, clay pigeons, water bottles, etc) against other teams and the clock. Done offhand at 50 and 100 yards. And YES, the guns are very accurate!!! Wearing uniforms and equipment of the Recent Unpleasantness...

Believe me, you've never done any shooting like this!

Go to YouTube at:

Its a bit dated, but it gives you great idea how we compete. Also search on N-SSA and you'll find some home-shot vids.

Check out the orgs website too: www.N-SSA.org

Feel free to ask me any questions about it! Several Forum members are N-SSA members and can vouch for how much fun it is...

Now you done it. I'ma hafta take me Renegade out asap.
TC Renegade, 54 cal. Guessing 40 years old.
It will do a three shot, one hole group at 100 yards with patched round ball if I do my part.
Now, how much powder do I still have? I will not shoot anything but real bp in this thing and that is hard to find in WNC.

I have good luck with Pyrodex RS and RWS caps for my PH P61 musketoon. I'd like to get a sergeant's model P58 Enfield some day but they are pricy.
