I’m in the market for a suppressor. This will be my first NFA item and I am planning on needing a can that’s gonna be useful from .300 Blackout up to at least .300 Win Mag. I like the idea of the modular suppressors, but gather that they aren’t quite as good at what they do as the dedicated single caliber versions. I’m a complete noob, so any earnest advise is appreciated. Aaaand GO!!!

More knowledgable folks will be along shortly, but I can say that I absolutely love my SiCo Omega. I use on 5.56, .308Win, .300BLK and 6.5 Creedmoor. All with great results both in terms of noise reduction and accuracy.

YHM Resonator, Griffin Recce 7, Rugged Razor762, Energetic Armament Vox, Dead Air Nomad-30

I have a couple questions first:

1. Have you ever shot a silencer before? I’m sure we could find somebody you could meet up with to experience it if you’ve never done so.

2. What is your definition of “modular”? I would say your statement about “aren’t quite as good” isn’t true based on how I’d define it. I’d like to know what you’re meaning when you say it.

I can tell you up front there are lots of good options out there.

Looks like a little over an hour from Mt Airy to the range I’m a member of (PHA)...so if you can’t find anybody closer and are willing to make the drive, let me know and we’ll figure something out.

What's your intended use?
Short & light, yet louder? Maximum noise reduction, damned the length and weight? Budget? Are you planning on mag dumps? Long range accuracy? Do you need to detach it with part under a hand guard?
I wanted light, quiet, accurate, easily moved from one platform to another and I won't be doing mag dumps= TBAC Ultra-7 30 cal that mounts on a brake or flash suppressor (that ISN'T a tuning fork) for 30 cal down to 22.

I have one Ive been trying to get rid of only because I never got into the long range game like I thought I would.

Who had all of em at battery oaks last m9nth? He told me to get a .45 that there would be no difference in level from a 30 cal and you can just get the adapter or something?
There aren’t many .45 cans that could take rifle rounds, especially 300 winmag. I can only think of one off the top of my head.

I like to deer hunt in and around Big Walker Mountain up in Virginia and so weight and length would definitely be better kept to modest levels. I like to shoot for accuracy and probably wouldn’t be doing a tremendous amount of rapid fire strings through it. But wouldn’t want to have to be overly cautious about heat buildup. Varmint hunting with it on my .300 Blackout is my prime intention though.

What length barrel on the 300WM?

Heat's not an issue (keep it below 800 deg F) for the Ultra. One mag dump's not an issue.
My second choice would be a SiCo Omega.
My 300BLK SBR has a TBAC U-7, it's used on the 300, 6.5 and 5.56.

Not sure why you would even try and silence a 300 win mag. I doubt it would ever make enough of a difference to spend that kind of money. If you're shooting subsonic then might as well get a 300blk which is more diverse and fires the same round (bullet...)

YHM is my preferred mounting system, but that doesn’t limit you to YHM silencers. Although, the Resonator seems like it would be a nice option for you.

YHM makes adapters for both the Omega and Saker lineup, and the Omega threads are becoming the industry standard. You could use the Omega adapter on a Dead Air Nomad, the EA Vox lineup, I believe the SiCo Chimera, and several other commercial cans.

Do you shoot suppressed very often? I’ve yet to find a single caliber/cartridge that wasn’t worth suppressing. It’s not going to be quiet, but I’ll take a 25-30dB reduction any time I can.

Most .30 cal cans can handle 300WM, which means you can buy sub-$500 silencers that work.

I have the .300 Blackout, but I may want a modular .300 Win Mag in the future. And if the suppressor helps tame the report some, then why not use it?

Thanks BigWaylon. Would the suppressor that Butter has for sale accept different types of mounting adapters other than the two threaded ones?

I believe the current version can do direct thread and also attach to their taper mount muzzle devices for a QD setup. But they continually update designs without changing the model name, so I have a hard time keeping up with their product line.

I’m fairly certain it doesn’t take adapters from other brands, though.

I’m definitely interested at that price point. The reviews seem to be very good too. What would be involved in transferring it to my local FFL Dealer while I submit my application?
Id actually have to go back a research, I've kinda forgot about this thing. I'll let you know soon

I'll have a Chimera to review hopefully any day now. I expected to have it already but the government shutdown screwed me.

I've already got the Dead Air adapter and have KeyMo muzzle devices on my Noveske N6 .308, 10.3 MK18 build, and 8" .300 blackout. I'll try to get as much video as I can whenever I get it.

My favorite for a bolt gun (.308win specifically) is a Thunder Beast Ultra 7 and drops the noise at the ear below the damage level in my bolt gun. They are Ti construction so they are pretty light but are not cheap ... a little over $1000 for the direct thread version. Also the change in POI from non-suppressed to suppressed the majority of the time is very slight and for hunting applications is well within minute-of-meat.

Y’all are both in NC. There won’t be a dealer involved. There would be a Form 4 filed with @Butter as the Transferor and you as the Transferee. The two of you would have to come up with a payment process and he would maintain possession until it was approved.

If you wanted to use a dealer, it would be two F4s, 2x$200 tax stamps, and two waiting periods...which is what it would take if y’all weren’t in the same state (and why the used NFA market isn’t very active except for MGs).

Where do I mail the check to Butter?

Would the approval process likely be much quicker through this method?

Nope. Since it’s going to a non-FFL, it won’t make any difference.

If the transaction was across state lines, the first F4 to an FFL in the buyer’s state should be faster, but the second F4 to the buyer is a normal filing. Same goes for a single F4 within a state.

@Althescal

Are you going to file as an entity (trust/Corp/LLC) or an individual? The way the forms are filled out is slightly different but basically the same info. Either way, you’ll need fingerprint cards and photos. But don’t waste your money on that by paying too much. You can do it all yourself for <$10, and the next time you do it will basically be free. (The cost is for an inkless fingerprint pad, assuming you don’t have one)

I guess I will just file as an individual unless there is any big advantage of going through the entity method. Will acquiring this subject me to possible BATFE inspections like FFL holders are?

There are several benefits to filing as an entity, but it’s just a question of whether they matter to you.

Main one is possession by anybody other than you. Spouse, siblings, children, parents, friends, etc, There would also be some privacy/private advantages for your estate.

Just as info...last trust I set up cost me $49 + notary fee. All done online until I printed it to go to notary.

...and no ATF inspections.

The notary was free, I went to our bank and had 5 copies notarized, looking ahead :D

In case you didn’t know, you don’t have to send a notarized copy. You just need to make a copy of the notarized version. (As in seal needs to be present, but doesn’t need to be an original)

I own the Sig Sauer 7.62SRDTi direct thread that I use on my Sig SSG 3000. It is rated to .300 Win Mag. The price wasn't too terrible, I believe I got it for under $800. I chose direct thread over the quick detach to increase accuracy. I can still hold sub-moa accuracy with the addition of the suppressor and it is very quiet, even with supersonic ammo.

My current best 5-shot group has been .703 MOA with this can. That's about the width of a dime.
