I’m not a huge fan of AR’s.. or shooting any semi autos. Always preferred a bolt gun. But with the future of prices and gun ownership being foggy.. all I have are heavy boltguns. I’d like a light weight rifle for a multi purpose/hunting rifle.
I want to get a can soon. So I’m looking at building out one of my stripped lowers as a 300, but what is the effective range for deer siZed game? 100-150?
Might build a grendel pistol.

Might say F it and get a lever gun

Doesn't Ruger make a cheap / light 300 bolt gun that's already threaded?

We killed two deer last yr with the blackout and neither took a step, both were high shoulder shots. Both were shot @ 50-75 yds and we'll try to keep shots under 125yds.

The 110gr Barnes bullets hammer deer and the Federal 120gr Trophy Copper also does well. Stay away from varmint rounds and subsonics and you'll be fine.

I think in the range you're describing you would be fine. That caliber got popular and several nice scopes have good reticles for drop.

This is what I am planning for my kid to be shooting at her first deer with this year.

I’ve taken deer with a blackout, but in a bolt gun. Made a lung shot on a doe at about 250 yards. While I had to track her a short distance, it did the job.

.17HMR works pretty good too :D

I've taken several deer with the 110 gr Barnes tipped tx bullet. I've also taken a few with the 110 gr Hornady vmax. Both work. Longest shot with either was around 70 yards. All but one dropped where they stood. The one that didn't made two crazy reflexive bounds headfirst into a tree.

Thanks guys, seems to do better than I thought. It’ll be between the 300 and Grendel
I have a 16” 300BLK AR I rarely ever use. It’s actually a S&W 300 Whisper upper.

If you want to borrow the whole thing, or just the upper, to try before you buy...let me know.

We use one bullet for all out .308 caliber requirements here, its the 100 Flat Base Raptor from CEB......In 300 BLK it has accounted for multiple deer over the last few years, lot of hogs/pigs, even a few bear. Of course you need to hand load it.........If anyone is interested in this bullet and load, I have the load and its pressure tested as well....... The load runs 2525-2550 fps in 16 inch guns at 54000 PSI. Proven load in ARs and Bolt guns and anything else that runs 300 BLK........ 10.5 to 12 inch guns 2375-2425 fps........... 8 inch guns 2275-2300 fps, depending on individual barrels...........

The next best bullet for Terminals is the 110 Barnes

Someone mentioned above about 300 BLK being the perfect setup for kids....> VERY VERY True, I have a lot of friend that use 300 BLK in this capacity and use this bullet to get the job done......

Both my Dad (83) and my Daughter (from 10-12) use a 300 blk out. If my daughter is going real light, she will take my 300 blk pistol. 110 Barnes is a mean bullet.

Now, we are in the Hollers of the Shenandoah Valley with high ridges and heavy brush... most shots are less than 100 yards.

You really want light? Look for the AAC Handi Rifle. Mine has gotten the job done for a few years. Although, given the option I would go bolt. If you want light I'm not sure the AR platform is the way to go unless you pay attention to the build.

I hand load for mine and originally went with subs. After some borderline performance I went a bit hotter. At some point I'll likely just go to normal supers with the can. I shot 3 deer last year. Two of them took good hits to the chest and never even reacted. I shot both a second time. They didn't go far, but just odd to hear the hit and watch them just walk off. And I don't like having to take 2 shots at all.

I vote Grendel for the sole reason of not being limited to distance. And you only really loose a little bullet mass when comparing to the 300blk. For my situation it is a better choice for the bean and wheat fields in my area.

Here is a good read of someone building a 12" Grendel and reaching out to 800 yrds consistent.

But don't get me wrong 300blk is a excellent caliber for deer and closely resembles 30-30 to me.

Ruger American. I have one. The new ones take AR mags.

Got one of those a few years ago..... Great little rifle for the price......Mine does not take AR Mags.... That would be nice....... Shoots great, good as it needs to, and better than I can shoot it.

I got a nice 5x4 (double brow tine) buck at about 50 yards from a ground blind with my home built 300BLK AR-15. I used the Hog Hammr ammo. He was facing directly at me after I called him in, so I shot him center chest, and the projectile mushroomed perfectly through the heart and left lung. He jumped once and fell over.
