So I have a squirrel problem, and I have this 300 BLK with a can, and I have a box of 123gn 30 cal bullets I will *NEVER* use and so I got to thinking... yeah I know, dangerous...

Can I download 300BLK to subsonic velocity with these light bullets and discretely solve my squirrel problem?

I'm sure that I can but will they cycle in my 10.5" AR? I dunno. Doesn't matter. One shot at a time is enough.

I have some ideas on where to begin but I thought I might pose this to the CFF crowd because somebody, somewhere, already did this. Youtube helps but only so much. Any of ya'll tried this?

I haven’t played around with trying to do light subs, I’m sure it’s possible but I couldn’t tell you where to start. Some alternatives that may work out better for you...

1) trade someone for some heavy bullets or loaded subs
2) a suppressed .22 bolt gun would be movie-quiet and perfect for the job.

On 300BLK Talk, I saw some lighter loads (presumably single shot)

CCI SRP
125gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
5.9gr TrailBoss
1020fps
2.111” OAL

125gr SMK
6.2gr TB
1063-1084fps, occasional crack w/ 16” barrel

125gr Speer TNT
5.6gr TB
CCI SRP
2.10”
1040fps

Berrys AK (Resized 308) 123gr
AA#5 5.0gr
831Fps
Wolf SR
1.953

Berrys AK (Resized 308) 123gr
AA#5 5.5gr
917Fps
Wolf SR
1.953”

Hope that helps some

Thanks that's good stuff. I'll post my own data if I survive the initial range trip.

As far as other options go.... i have some heavy subs. Those are plan B. And I would love to have a 22 with a can but my budget says use what's in the cabinet.

well a threaded 22 is easy, question is can you mount your 30cal can to 1/2x28?

yes but... That's a whole other project. which I WILL get around to. eventually.

You're not going to cycle an AR with a sub that light. I tried a half dozen powders with 110-160ish grain bullets. Fine with a handi rifle or bolt gun but not a gasser. Of course you can single load them...

Or pull a weight or 2 out of the buffer

I've got a recipe (cribbed from somewhere on this forum) for 30 cal, 90 grain XTP bullets (pistol bullets). Stupid quiet with a can. And, no, single-shot in my AR.

Pistol 300 BLK
Hornaday XTP 90
Hodgdon Trailboss 4.5
COAL 1.680
1050 Tested Subsonic pistol.

I use those XTP rounds in my M1carbine. They don't reliably feed, but dang will they destroy a watermellon loaded up for 2000 FPS

Never thought about trailboss in a 300blk, I may have to try this. Love that stuff in my 30-30.

Yes, with a thread adapter. I do it occasionally. But with .22 being dirty and I have a sealed can I don’t do it a lot.

Finally got to the range to play with this. i chose to use Titegroup since it has already been well established for use of small volumes in medium sized cases.

My load:
300 AAC Blackout
123 gn eXtreme plated FP 0.312"
4.1gn Titegroup
Winchester srp
1.856"

With a 10.5" bbl, suppressed i get 1050 fps +/- 40. the ES looks bad but i get good precision to 25 yds with no POI shift from my other more powerful pet loads. Does not eject but I don't care as that makes it quieter. now for some skwerl huntin...
